Dieses Buch stellt Körpervorstellungen der Spätrenaissance jenen der Gender Studies gegenüber, da diese historisch inkompatiblen Textkorpora signifikant ähnliche holistische Ansätze in medialen und epistemischen Zeitenwenden verfolgen. In den ausgewählten naturphilosophischen Texten des 16. Jahrhunderts werden originäre Theorien zu Leiblichkeit verhandelt, die an eine mediterrane Tradition des Materialismus anknüpfen. Gemeinsam sind ihnen relationale Modelle von Natur und Kultur, was etwa eine ausgeklügelte Affektelehre dokumentiert. Wechselseitige Einflüsse zwischen Körperinnerem und Körperumgebung sind auch zentraler Forschungsgegenstand rezenter Gender Studies, die auf die Offenlegung der metaphorischen Verfasstheit wissenschaftlicher „Wahrheiten“ zielen. Die Archäologie historischer Körpermodelle erschließt originäre Zugänge zu Konstruktionen des (männlichen) Subjektes. Da Geschlechterregime immer auf Ordnungen von Körper und Geist basieren, ist es unerlässlich, deren Wechselspiel mit technologischen, sozialen und kulturellen Paradigmen zu beleuchten. Deshalb wird auch die Verarbeitung philosophischer Körperkonzepte in wirkmächtigen literarischen Texten wie etwa der Celestina oder dem Orlando Furioso eingehend analysiert.

Monster und Barbaren sondern sich durch ihren Mangel oder Überfluss bestimmter Eigenschaften von der menschlichen Gesellschaft ab. Damit stehen sie am Rand, aber nicht außerhalb derselben. Als Grenzwesen erfüllen sie eine wichtige gesellschaftliche Funktion. Indem sie uns zeigen, wie wir nicht sein sollen, geben sie uns eine mögliche Antwort darauf, wie wir sein sollen. Damit sind sie im wahrsten Sinn des Wortes negative Identifikationsfiguren. Das Monster ist nur deshalb monströs, weil wir es dazu machen. Etwas von Natur aus Monströses, geistig wie physisch Abscheuliches, gibt es nicht, weil die Natur nicht zwischen "gut" und "böse" unterscheidet. In der Natur überleben jene, die an ihre Umgebung am besten angepasst sind. Der Natur ist es dabei gleichgültig, ob die "Gejagten" gut und die "Jäger" böse sind, da sie nicht nach solchen Kriterien urteilt. Die Natur arbeitet mit dem binären Code "fressen" und "gefressen werden". Ob der Menschenfressende Tiger böse ist oder nicht, interessiert sie nicht. Der Tiger ist auch nicht deswegen böse, weil er Menschen frisst, sondern weil er für die um ihn lebenden Menschen eine Gefahr darstellt. Da er für den Menschen eine Gefahr darstellt, ihm nicht geheuer ist, wird er zum Un-geheuer. Monster spielen nicht nur im sogenannten. finsteren Mittelalter eine wichtige gesellschaftliche Funktion. Dass wir auch in unserer scheinbar so "aufgeklärten Zeit" andere häufig als kulturell oder zivilisatorisch minderwertig betrachten, wenn sie nicht den gängigen kulturellen Standards entsprechen, beweisen zahlreiche Beispiele der jüngeren Geschichte. The mid-twentieth century saw a change in paradigms of art history: iconology. The main claim of this novel trend in art history was that renowned Renaissance artists (such as Botticelli, Leonardo, or Michelangelo) created imaginative syntheses between their art and contemporary cosmology, philosophy, theology, and magic. The Neoplatonism in the books by Marsilio Ficino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola became widely acknowledged for its lasting influence on art. It thus became common knowledge that Renaissance artists were not exclusively concerned with problems intrinsic to their work but that their artifacts encompassed a much larger intellectual and cultural horizon. Casuistry and Early Modern Spanish Literature examines a neglected yet crucial field: the importance of casuistical thought and discourse in the development of literary genres in early modern Spain. Faced with the momentous changes wrought by discovery, empire, religious schism, expanding print culture, consolidation of legal codes and social transformation, writers sought innovation within existing forms (the novella, the byzantine romance, theatrical drama) and created novel genres (most notably, the picaresque). These essays show how casuistry, with its questioning of example and precept, and meticulous concern with conscience and the particularities of circumstance, is instrumental in cultivating the subjectivity, rhetorical virtuosity and spirit of inquiry that we have come to associate with the modern novel.
