Das "Hungerleiderhaus" und sein Besitzer Simon Hungerleider, ein erfolgreicher jüdischer Geflügelhändler, stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Geschichte, die im Osten der k.u.k. Monarchie ihren Anfang nahm, in Wien ihre Blütezeit erlebte und im Exil und den NS-Todeslagern ihr tragisches Ende fand. Das "Hungerleiderhaus" war ab März 1938 Schauplatz der Judenverfolgung mit allen Facetten des Nazi-Terrors. Sein Besitzer Simon Hungerleider hatte bis dahin ein bewegtes Leben geführt: Er arbeitete als Zigarrenverkäufer in einem Bordell in Amerika, war viermal verheiratet, dreimal geschieden und hatte einen unehelichen Sohn, er erlebte Verhaftungen und Freisprüche. Aber 1938 war Simons Welt eine andere: Er spielte mit den NS-Behörden Katz und Maus, trieb den Abwickler seiner Firma zur Verzweiflung, schloss einen notariellen Erbvertrag mit seiner "arischen" Frau, schenkte ihr das Hungerleiderhaus und inszenierte eine Schein-Scheidung. Nicht abwenden konnte er die Ermordung seines achtjährigen Enkels Herbert in Maly Trostinec. Simon Hungerleider starb Ende 1942 in Theresienstadt.

Eingerahmt ist diese Entwicklungsgeschichte des Traums von der europäischen Einigung von der persönlichen Sicht und vom persönlichen Erleben des Autors als Generalsekretär des Europarates, der ältesten und einzigen pan-europäischen Institution. Es folgt schließlich eine Einschätzung der weiteren Entwicklung durch den Autor.

The Eucharist originated at the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. It is based on the prayer of thanksgiving that Jesus pronounced over the bread and wine at that meal. “Eucharist” means “thanksgiving”, “praise”, and “blessing”. The Church celebrates the Eucharist as a memorial of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is more than a remembrance of the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. In the Eucharist the sacrifice of our redemption becomes present sacramentally. In the past, dogmatic theology has treated the meaning of the Eucharist while disregarding the form of its liturgical celebration, whereas liturgical studies have been content with only the latter. Yet the two cannot be separated, any more than liturgy and dogma or pastoral practice and doctrine can be understood without the other. The Church’s liturgy is not something external to Christian revelation, but rather, as Joseph Ratzinger said, “revelation accepted in faith and prayer”. In this work Helmut Hoping combines the approaches of dogmatic theology and liturgy while examining the Eucharist from a historical and systematic perspective. This new English translation of the second German edition of this major work, revised and expanded, includes a comparative analysis of the Second Eucharistic Prayer and a chapter on the theology of the words of institution.

Dance plays an important role in many religious traditions, in rites of passage, processions, healing rituals or festivals. But it is also controversial, especially in Christianity. Colonial European Christian discourses tend to separate dance from religion(s) and spirituality. This volume explores dance as "Third Space", following Homi Bhabha's postcolonial metaphor. The "Inter-Dance approach" combines interdisciplinary theoretical considerations with case studies. International experts examine dance controversies and discourses from the early church to World Christianity, as well as in Hasidic Judaism, Greek mysteries, Islamic Sufism, West African Togolese religions, and Afro-Brazilian Umbanda. In September 1855, Teresa Dus, a Slovenian-speaking ten-year-old girl, saw the Virgin Mary in Porzûs. The apparitions began a devotion among the Slovenian population on the border between the Italian and Slovenian ethnicities and cultures. The ecclesiastical authorities of Udine took the child, locked her in a religious house and extinguished the devotion. The context was marked by a cholera epidemic and by the "national" and pan-Slavist problem, exacerbated by the Crimean war (1853–1856). Devotion to the Virgin had had an international flowering "from below" (La Salette, 1846), followed by the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception (1854). The dogma was then "sanctioned" by the apparitions of Lourdes (1858). The Porzûs affair is investigated in this international context.
