Als russische Händler und Beamte im 18. Jahrhundert Ostsibirien, den Nordpazifik und schließlich die Nordwestküste Amerikas erreichten, sahen sie sich bald unerwarteter Konkurrenz gegenüber. Das große Interesse an wertvollen Seeotterpelzen wurde von Briten, Amerikanern und Spaniern geteilt und der Nordpazifik wandelte sich von einer vernachlässigten Weltregion zu einem Gebiet wirtschaftlicher, wissenschaftlicher und territorialer Ambitionen.Aus dieser Situation in einem geografischen Randgebiet ergeben sich zentrale geschichtswissenschaftliche Fragen: Mit welchen Strategien wurde die traditionelle russische »Politik der Steppe« der neuen Situation angepasst? Wie legitimierten die Akteure ihr Ausgreifen in einen ozeanischen Raum und auf einen anderen Kontinent? Wie passt dieser Prozess in das historische Narrativ von homogenisierender Territorialisierung im 18. Jahrhundert?Kann Russisch Amerika überhaupt in die Geschichte Russlands eingebunden werden oder muss es – wie zuweilen in der Forschung impliziert wird – als Anhängsel und Ausnahmeerscheinung gelten, die schließlich ohnehin als Fehlversuch abgestoßen und an die USA verkauft wurde?Die Studie nimmt die zeitgenössischen Raumwahrnehmungen in Texten und Karten in den Blick, analysiert Vorstellungen von Zugehörigkeit und Fremdheit und problematisiert dabei grundlegende, oft für selbstverständlich gehaltene räumliche Konzepte wie Distanzen, Kontinente, Flächen oder den Gegensatz von Land und Meer. Sowohl die Expansion nach Nordamerika als auch der Verkauf Alaskas 1867 an die USA erscheinen damit in einem neuen Licht.

A Financial Times Best Book of the Year The untold story of how Russian espionage in imperial China shaped the emergence of the Russian Empire as a global power. From the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, the Russian Empire made concerted efforts to collect information about China. It bribed Chinese porcelain-makers to give up trade secrets, sent Buddhist monks to Mongolia on intelligence-gathering missions, and trained students at its Orthodox mission in Beijing to spy on their hosts. From diplomatic offices to guard posts on the Chinese frontier, Russians were producing knowledge everywhere, not only at elite institutions like the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. But that information was secret, not destined for wide circulation. Gregory Afinogenov distinguishes between the kinds of knowledge Russia sought over the years and argues that they changed with the shifting aims of the state and its perceived place in the world. In the seventeenth century, Russian bureaucrats were focused on China and the forbidding Siberian frontier. They relied more on spies, including Jesuit scholars stationed in China. In the early nineteenth century, the geopolitical challenge shifted to Europe: rivalry with Britain drove the Russians to stake their prestige on public-facing intellectual work, and knowledge of the East was embedded in the academy. None of these institutional configurations was especially effective in delivering strategic or commercial advantages. But various knowledge regimes did have their consequences. Knowledge filtered through Russian espionage and publication found its way to Europe, informing the encounter between China and Western empires. Based on extensive archival research in Russia and beyond, Spies and Scholars breaks down long-accepted assumptions about the connection between knowledge regimes and imperial power and excavates an intellectual legacy largely neglected by historians.

Auch in den deutschsprachigen Reiseberichten Alexander von Humboldts, Adam Johann von Krusensterns und Georg Heinrich von Langsdorffs sind sie von zentraler Bedeutung. Die Reisenden nutzen globale Vergleiche, um die heterogene Masse der auf Reisen gesammelten Daten zu bewältigen und zu kohärentem Wissen über die Welt zusammenzufügen. Aus einer epistemologischen oder wissenshistorischen Perspektive muss das Vergleichen demnach als enorm produktive Methode beschrieben werden: Mithilfe von Vergleichen bringen Humboldt, Krusenstern und Langsdorff die Welt zuallererst in eine intelligible Form. Aus einer postkolonialen Perspektive erweist sich diese epistemische Produktivität jedoch auch als hochgradig problematisch: Die vergleichende Auseinandersetzung mit der Welt ist trotz Momenten der Selbstkritik zumeist nicht von einer asymmetrischen Weltwahrnehmung und hierarchischen Weltentwürfen zu trennen. Denn wie die vorliegende Studie zeigt, konstruieren Humboldts, Krusensterns und Langsdorffs Vergleiche nicht nur globale Zusammenhänge und Entwicklungen, sondern auch eurozentristische, kolonialistische und imperialistische globale Hierarchien.

Historians often assume a one-directional transmission of knowledge and ideas, leading to the establishment of spatial hierarchies defined as centres and peripheries. In recent decades, transnational and global history have contributed to a more inclusive understanding of intellectual and cultural exchanges that profoundly challenged the ways in which we draw our mental maps. Covering the early modern and modern periods, Re-Mapping Centre and Periphery investigates the asymmetrical and multi-directional structure of such encounters within Europe as well as in a global context. Exploring subjects from the shores of the Russian Empire to nation-making in Latin America, the international team of contributors demonstrates how, as products of human agency, centre and periphery are conditioned by mutual dependencies; rather than representing absolute categories of analysis, they are subjective constructions determined by a constantly changing discursive context. Through its analysis, the volume develops and implements a conceptual framework for remapping centres and peripheries, based on conceptual history and discourse history. As such, it will appeal to a wide variety of historians, including transnational, cultural and intellectual, and historians of early modern and modern periods.
