Die Firma IDC erwartet in den nächsten Jahren ein exponentielles Wachstum dieses Marktes und prognostiziert, dass Maschine-zu-Maschine-Verbindungen bis 2017 die Zahl der Maschine-zu-Mensch-Verbindungen übersteigen werden. Die Frage, die nun in jüngster Vergangenheit diskutiert wird: Wie verändern sich derzeitige IT-Architekturen durch den Trend des "Internet der Dinge"? Als jüngstes Beispiel ist die Gartner-Studie „The Impact of the Internet of Things on Data Centers“ zu erwähnen, die die aktuellen Diskussionen zusätzlich belebt.
