Um die Entdeckung des Judas Evangeliums ranken sich viele Geschichten und Mythen, denn bevor es in die Hände von Forscher gelangt ist, war es wahrscheinlich im Besitz von Grabräubern und Schwarzhändlern. Den Ursprung dieses Weges zu finden, ist nahezu unmöglich. Die plausibelste Geschichte ist aber, dass ein Bauer 1978 auf der Suche nach Schätzen in den Grabhöhlen von Ägypten eine steinerne Truhe gefunden hat, in welcher sich ein in Leder gebundenes Buch befand, welches er anschließend auf dem Antiquitätenmarkt verkaufen wollte.
