Philosophical And Spiritual Perspectives On Decent Work written by Dominique Peccoud and has been published by International Labour Organization this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Employment (Economic theory) categories.

This volume reflects on the values behind the ILO's Decent Work Agenda and provides a forum for contributors from various humanistic, philosophical, spiritual and religious traditions to express their views on the significance of work at all levels of society, from the individual person to the global community. Common, universal values are explored, as well as differences, in order to shed more light on the concept of decent work. In all societies, there is an ethical dimension to work, connected to the rights and entitlements of those who perform it. This also includes spiritual value such as dignity, personal identity, a sense of purpose in life, the "divine call to work" and so on. In this book, contributors - from the Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucian, and various secular traditions - come together to exchange comments and reflections on the "floor" of decency as defined by the ILO: freedom of association, eradication of forced and compulsory labour, abolition of child labour and elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation. It is hoped that this type of approach will be inspiring. Before embarking on major international strategic papers, legal instruments and public policies, the systematic consultation of an interfaith and humanistic forum would enable cultural and religious views to be taken into consideration. In this way such instruments would be anchored in shared values and not influenced by any one dominant conception of human existence in the world.

Mahatma Gandhi once chided a Christian friend, "All you Christians, missionaries and all, must begin to live more like Jesus Christ." And what Christian among us would disagree with him? After the holy wars and witch-hunts, after persecutions and political machinations, there is a broad sense today that the Church, however well-meaning, is on the wrong side of history. But do we really know our history? In this collaboration with historian Arnold Angenendt, best-selling German author Manfred Lütz dares to show us what contemporary historians actually say about Christianity's track record over the ages. This detailed overview begins with the ancient pagans, passing through Israel, the early Church martyrs, Constantine's Rome, the reign of Charlemagne, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Reformation, the Borgia popes, the Galileo affair, the conquistadores, the French Revolution, the slave trade, the Holocaust, the sex abuse crisis, and more. The Scandal of the Scandals separates myth from fact, giving us a candid portrait of Christendom with its scars and all. Prepare to be amazed at how little you really knew about Christianity.

How do religions spread in today’s world, where Christian missions have lost influence and modern nations have replaced colonial empires? Religion on the Move! is a collection of essays charting new religious expansions. Contemporary evangelists may be Nigerian, Korean, Brazilian or Congolese, working at the grassroots and outside the mainstream in Pentecostal, reformist Islamic, and Hindu spiritual currents. While transportation and media provide newfound mobility, the mission field may be next door, in Europe, North America, and within the "South," where migrants from Africa, Asia, and Latin America settle. These essays, using perspectives from religious studies, ethnography, history and sociology, show that immigrants, women, and other disempowered peoples transmit their faiths from everywhere to everywhere, engaging in globalization from below. Swiss theologian Karl Barth traveled to the United States only once during his long career. In 1962, newly retired, he came to visit family and to deliver a series of lectures subsequently published (by Eerdmans) as Evangelical Theology: An Introduction, which remains in print and widely read to this day. Besides recounting some delightful and poignant biographical details about Barth s two-month journey through the States, the authors of this book revisit central themes in Barth s mature theology and explore the theological and ethical significance of his Evangelical Theology. Even more, the distinguished scholars contributing to this volume assess contemporary North American theology and show how Barth s Evangelical Theology remains as bracing, powerful, and relevant today as it was fifty years ago. Previous scholarship on recent Muslim Qurʾanic exegesis has mostly focussed on modernising trends, usually remaining within the confines of a single language area. Transcending this hitherto dominating narrow focus, this book offers a comparative analysis of a body of contemporary Sunnite Qurʾanic commentaries from the Arab World, Indonesia and Turkey. It takes into account both the influence of specific local conditions and the common intellectual heritage they rely on. By paying special attention not only to new developments, but also to the embeddedness of contemporary Qurʾanic exegesis into a more than thousand-year-old intellectual tradition, it provides new insights into the religious, academic, political and social context of exegetical practice in the modern Islamic World.

Within western political, media and academic discourses, Muslim communities are predominantly seen through the prism of their Islamic religiosities, yet there exist within diasporic communities unique and complex secularisms. Drawing on detailed interview and ethnographic material gathered in the UK, this book examines the ways in which a form of secularism – ‘non-Islamiosity’ – amongst members of the Iranian diaspora shapes ideas and practices of diasporic community and identity, as well as wider social relations.
