In der Moderne lassen sich zwei Achsen eines grundlegenden Widerspruchs im Verhältnis von Kunst und Gesellschaft ausmachen. Moshe Zuckermann geht der Frage nach, welche Bedeutung die in der klassischen Romantik geforderte Autonomie der Kunst im Zeitalter einer zunehmenden Institutionalisierung von Kunst noch haben kann. Darüber hinaus untersucht er, weshalb ein in der Gegenwart mit Hochgenuß rezipiertes Werk Bachs als gegenwärtige Kunst mit der Begründung abgelehnt wird, daß die Bachschen Stil- und Ausdrucksmittel nicht mehr die gegenwärtigen - "die unseren" - sein können. Was macht die Rezeption des historischen Bach in der Jetztzeit akzeptabel, das ihn zugleich als Ausdruck der Jetztzeit verbietet? Beide Problemstellungen sind zwar nicht ursächlich miteinander verknüpft, gehören aber doch in den gleichen Diskurszusammenhang. Bei der Erörterung der Fragen werden Themenkomplexe wie "Moderne, Aufklärung und bürgerliche Gesellschaft", "Kunst und das Politische", "Das Problem des Gesamtkunstwerks", "Kunstautonomie im Zeitalter der kulturellen Postmoderne" sowie "Aspekte hoher und niedriger Kultur" anvisiert. Die Vorstellung von kunstsoziologischen Denkern wie Theodor W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Umberto Eco und Pierre Bourdieu liefert dabei das theoretische Begriffsinstrumentarium und bildet einen Abriß des über diese Fragestellungen seit Jahrzehnten herrschenden Diskurses.
