Dieses Buch setzt sich intensiv mit dem Leib-Seele-Problem auseinander. Hierbei geht es vordergrndig darum, die L”sungsschwierigkeiten der wichtigsten Ans„tze herauszufiltern und diese anschlieáend der exzentrischen Positionalit„t von Plessner gegenberzustellen. In einer historischen Dreiteilung wird dem Leib-Seele-Problem mit seinen Wurzeln in der Antike, in der klassischen Neuzeit und dem ?modernen? Geist-Gehirn-Problem Rechnung getragen. Der Materialismus stellt im aktuellen Diskurs das favorisierte Lehrmodell dar, weshalb diesem und seinen unterschiedlichen Auspr„gungen ein besonderes Augenmerk geschenkt wird. Aufgrund einer regen Beteiligung der Hirnforschung an der Leib-Seele-Debatte werden die Positionen von Wolf Singer und Gerhard Roth in die Ausarbeitung einbezogen. Es zeigt sich, dass sowohl reduktiv als auch nicht reduktiv materialistischen L”sungsans„tzen schwerwiegende Einw„nde gegenberstehen. Scheitert der reduktive Materialismus sp„testens an der Unerkl„rbarkeit der Qualia und dem Selbstbewusstsein, haben nicht reduktive Materialisten mit der Standhaftigkeit ihrer eigenen Position zu k„mpfen. Konsequenterweise mssen sie entweder den Rckzug in den Reduktionismus antreten oder in einen unheilvollen Dualismus verfallen, der mit der Interaktion zwischen K”rper und Geist zu k„mpfen hat. Insofern scheint sich das Leib-Seele-Problem, „hnlich einem Teufelskreis, einer L”sung zu entziehen. Alternativ dazu entwickelte Plessner die Theorie der exzentrischen Positionalit„t, die den Menschen aus der organischen Natur heraus rekonstruiert. Im Leben selbst, welches k”rperlich und seelisch zugleich und im Menschen ist, findet Plessner einen Ausweg aus dem Reduktionismus und dem Substanzdualismus. Mit der Grenzrealisierung bzw. dem Doppelaspekt als Eigenschaft erlangt der zum Leben erwachte K”rper den Charakter der Positionaliti„t, der, in aufsteigender Stufe, den Menschen zu dem macht, was er ist: Einem exzentrisch positionierten Wesen, welches sich im Ich als positionales Aktivit„tszentrum ausdrckt und den Inbegriff von Selbstreflexion und Selbstbewusstsein darstellt. šber das denkende Ich konstituiert sich die Sph„re des Geistes, die kein zus„tzliches Substrat neben K”rper und Seele darstellt, sondern als soziales Ph„nomen zu betrachten ist. Dank der Hirnforschung wissen wir heute, dass eine Steigerung der Selbstreferenz im Gehirn zu Metarepr„sentationen fhrt, die das physische Pendant bzw. den physischen Aspekt zum exzentrischen, geistigen Ich darstellen k”nnten.

Emile Durkheim, one of the founding fathers of sociology, has been the subject of many studies. But this book is the first to introduce the individual and collective work of his colleagues and disciples who formed with him the 'French school of sociology'.
