Im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes steht die Diskussion eines (oder des?) leitenden Paradigmas der Soziologie. Dieses Modell trägt der Forderung des methodologischen Individualismus Rechnung, Veränderungen von Makro-Phänomenen über den Umweg der Mikro-Ebene, also über die Entscheidung von Akteuren, sowie deren Aggregation zu erklären. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die These, dass vornehmlich die Makro-Phänomene von soziologischem Interesse seien, diese sich aber eben nur durch die Rückführung auf das Handeln individueller Akteure vollständig aufklären ließen.

Abstract: "Das 'Modell der soziologischen Erklärung' (MSE) steht in ontologischer Perspektive immer wieder in der Kritik. Als Erfindung 'theoretisch unbegabter Amerikaner' (Luhmann) wird dessen Makro-Mikro-Makro-Ebenenkonzeption als ein nicht systematisch entwickeltes Instrument eingeschätzt, das wenig geeignet sei, komplexeres soziales Geschehen adäquat erfassen zu können. Ontologischer Vorrang der Mikro- vor der Makroperspektive, einseitiges Hervorheben der Mikroebene, Verfehlen der Emergenz sozialer Gebilde, deren Eigenständigkeit mit der Ebenenkonzeption nicht erklärt werden könne, sind einige Stichworte für diese Kritik. Prüft man diese Kritikpunkte anhand des MSE in der Version von Hartmut Esser, erweisen sie sich als wenig stichhaltig. Die Verwendung von „Rational Choice“-Ansätzen spielt nicht nur in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften, sondern auch zunehmend in der Soziologie und Politikwissenschaft eine immer größere Rolle. In den USA nehmen theoriebezogene Veröffentlichungen zur rationalen Wahl in den wichtigsten politikwissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften bereits einen Anteil von ca. 25 % ein (Vgl. Kunz/Druwe 1996: S. 7). In dieser Verschriftlichung soll verdeutlicht werden, dass „Rational Choice“-Ansätze auf einer bestimmten Variante des Methodologischen Individualismus – unter Einbeziehung der objektiven Logik der Situation – basieren. Hierzu wird zunächst erklärt, was Methodologischer Individualismus ist, welche Varianten unterschieden werden können und wie demnach sozialwissenschaftliche Erklärungen auszusehen haben. „Rational Choice“-Ansätze sind dabei nur ein Teil im Konzept der soziologischen Erklärung und verdeutlichen die Selektion der Handlungsmöglichkeiten von Individuen. Die geläufigste Variante für diese Form der Selektion ist dabei das Verwenden des Verhaltensmodells des homo oecomomicus, welches einen bestimmten Begriff des Individuums impliziert. In einem zweiten Schritt soll das Verhältnis zwischen gesellschaftlicher Individualisierung und Methodologischem Individualismus bzw. soziologischer Erklärung charakterisiert werden.

How does foreign news on sub-Saharan Africa emerge, which actors are relevant in its making, and on the basis of what interests do these actors shape the coverage that is then presented as 'neutral information' to a broad international audience? Closely examining the relationship between foreign correspondents of international news media and humanitarian organisations, Lena von Naso shows how the aid and media sectors cooperate in Africa in a unique way.
