The early-fourteenth-century St Gall Passion Play comes from the Central Rhineland. Unfortunately its music (over one hundred Latin and German chants) is given in the manuscript only as brief incipits, without any musical notation. This interdisciplinary study reconstructs the musical stratum of the play. It is the first full-scale musical reconstruction of a large German Passion play in recent times, using the latest available scholarly data in drama, liturgy and music. It draws conclusions about performance practice and forces, and offers a sound basis for an authentic performance of the play. The study applies musical and liturgical data to the problem of localizing the play (the first time this has been systematically attempted), and assesses how applicable this might be to other plays. It presents a detailed study of the distinctive medieval liturgical uses of three German dioceses, Mainz, Speyer and Worms. The comparative approach suggests how the music of other plays might be reconstructed and understood, and shows that a better understanding of the music of medieval drama has much to teach us about other aspects of the genre. The book should be of interest to literary scholars, theatre historians, musicologists, liturgical scholars, and those involved in the performance of early drama.

It is commonly held that medieval Christians viewed medieval Jews in exclusively negative terms. This is certainly the dominant opinion in much twentieth-century scholarship, and it is not wholly without justification. It is, however, an opinion that does not accurately reflect the breadth of medieval German Christian thinking about medieval German Jews. Drawing on Passion plays, hagiographical narratives and didactic literature, this monograph reveals a hitherto largely unacknowledged diversity in medieval German representations of Jews. In many of the best-attested texts from the late medieval and early modern periods, Jews appear in German literature as sympathetic, even morally exemplary figures.

Beards and Texts explores the literary portrayal of beards in medieval German texts from the mid-twelfth to the early sixteenth centuries. It argues that as the pre-eminent symbol for masculinity the beard played a distinctive role throughout the Middle Ages in literary discussions of such major themes as majesty and humanity. At the same time beards served as an important point of reference in didactic poetry concerned with wisdom, teaching and learning, and in comedic texts that were designed to make their audiences laugh, not least by submitting various figure-types to the indignity of having their beards manhandled. Four main chapters each offer a reading of a work or poetic tradition of particular significance (Pfaffe Konrad’s Rolandslied; Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Willehalm; ‘Sangspruchdichtung’; Heinrich Wittenwiler’s Ring), before examining cognate material of various kinds, including sources or later versions of the same story, manuscript variants and miniatures and further relevant beard-motifs from the same period. The book concludes by reviewing the portrayal of Jesus in vernacular German literature, which represents a special test-case in the literary history of beards. As the first study of its kind in medieval German studies, this investigation submits beard-motifs to sustained and detailed analysis in order to shed light both on medieval poetic techniques and the normative construction of masculinity in a wide range of literary genres.

Die Gesamtausgabe der Hessischen Passionsspielgruppe umfaßt drei Bände, in denen die einzelnen Überlieferungszweige nicht nur auf der handschriftlichen Grundlage nach einheitlichen Editionsprinzipien neu ediert, sondern in ihrem textgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang durch Paralleldruck dokumentiert werden. Die Alsfelder Spieltradition zeichnet sich zusätzlich dadurch aus, daß sich allein im Spieltext vier Bearbeitungsschichten zwischen Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts und 1517 unterscheiden lassen, zu denen sich noch Textauszüge für Einzelrollen und ein Regiebuch - gleichfalls mit signifikanten Textänderungen - stellen. Zusammen mit der "Friedberger Dirigierrolle" (in einer neuen Rekonstruktion des verschollenen Textes) und dem "Fritzlarer Passionsspielfragment" läßt sich gerade am vorliegenden Band nahezu einmalig eine Vorstellung von Textkonstanz und -varianz im Detail, von der Bandbreite bei der Um- und Neugestaltung innerhalb des Handlungsverlaufs und der Szenenstruktur auch bei den vielen spätmittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Spielen gewinnen, bei denen die Überlieferungslage weniger günstig ist. Über 60 Melodien vermitteln einen Eindruck von der musikalischen Gestaltung vergleichbarer Spiele, ein Spielerverzeichnis gibt Einblicke ins gesellschaftliche Umfeld der Spieler. Band 3 wird die Gesamtedition mit dem "Heidelberger Passionsspiel" als Leittext des Paralleldrucks bieten. Zu den einzelnen Bänden sind jeweils auch Kommentarbände vorgesehen.

Damit liegen alle Spielzeugnisse dieser bedeutenden spätmittelalterlich-frühneuhochdeutschen Spielgruppe in einer Neuausgabe vor, in der die einzelnen Überlieferungszeugnisse nicht nur auf der handschriftlichen Grundlage nach einheitlichen Prinzipien ediert, sondern in ihrem textgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang durch Paralleldruck dokumentiert sind. Innerhalb des Gesamtkorpus wartet das »Heidelberger Passionsspiel« mit mehreren Besonderheiten auf: Es repräsentiert eine ältere, erst durch die Parallelisierung erkannte Frankfurter Spieltradition (greifbar in der »Frankfurter Dirigierrolle«, im »Frankfurter Passionsspiel«, im »Frankfurter Passionsspielfragment«), es umfaßt als einziges Spiel der Frankfurter Passionsspielgruppe 13 alttestamentliche Präfigurationen und es steht in einem merkwürdigen Spannungsfeld zwischen Dokumentation oder Konzeption eines Spieltextes und der Aufzeichnung zu Lesezwecken einschließlich der Nennung beigezogener Bibelstellen.
