[...] It’s like a picnic.” John Carpenter Das oben stehende Zitat John Carpenters lässt die Janusköpfigkeit des Genres erkennen. So spiegelt der Horrorfilm einerseits den unter den Zuschauern meist als einfachen Gruselstreifen konsumierten Unterhaltungsfilm, andererseits doch ebenso eine äußerst kunstvolle, spielerische Umgangsform mit existentiellen Themen des Menschen: Tod , Angst, Einsamkeit, Verwandlung, Glaube. Diese Publikation untersucht das Genre Horrorfilm unter dem Licht einer “dialektischen Symbolik”. Durch diese “Lichtsetzung“ zielt sie auf die kritische Hinterfragung vorherrschender Deutungsmuster und Assoziationen .Werden denn durch die filmische Darstellung der Teufelsaustreibung in “The Exorcist”(1973, William Friedkin) die Zuschauer dem teuflisch Schlechten näher gebracht? Oder stellt dieses Ritual nicht unmissverständlich den christlichen Wertekanon als Grundfeste der westlichen Zivilisation dar? Können und werden nicht Symbole wie auch symbolische Handlungen immer unter dem vertrauten und legitimen Wissensstand entschlüsselt, um später in das Alltagswissen der Gesellschaft aufgenommen zu werden? Klassisch filmwissenschaftlich wird anhand des Einstellungsprotokolls nebst Einstellungsgrafik die filmtechnische Umsetzung der Spannungserzeugung untersucht und allgemein verständlich visualisiert. Ein weiteres Ziel dieser Arbeit stellt die Suche nach den historischen Quellen dem Genre dar. Wie entstand der klassische Horrorfilm? Woher bezogen die ersten Regisseure ihre Ideen? Welche Themen wurden aufgegriffen und durch das neue Medium abgelichtet? Da diese Fragen nur an einem fein differenzierten Untersuchungsgegenstand zu klären seien werden, ist eine vorangestellte Definition, oder realistischer, ein Definitionsversuch unerlässlich. Was ist Horrorfilm? Was sind die Kennzeichen des Genres? Gibt es einen zeitlich bedingten Wandlungsprozess innerhalb des Genres? Noch eine Anmerkung zur Verwendung von Filmtiteln. Sämtliche Filme werden nur in den Originaltiteln erwähnt. Despite their opposite emotional effects, humor and horror are highly similar phenomena. They both can be traced back to (the detection, resolution, and emotional elaboration of) incongruities, understood as semantic violations through unexpected combinations of oppositional information. However, theoretical and experimental comparisons between humor and resolvable incongruities that elicit other emotions than exhilaration have been lacking so far. To gain more insights into the linguistic differences between humor and horror and the cognitive real-time processing of both, a main concern of this book is to discuss the transferability of linguistic humor theories to a systematic horror investigation and directly compare self-paced reading times (SPR), facial actions (FACS), and event-related brain potentials (ERP) of normed minimal quadruplets with frightening and humorous incongruities as well as (in)coherent stimuli. The results suggest that humor and horror share cognitive resources to detect and resolve incongruities. To better distinguish humor from neighboring phenomena, this book refines current humor theories by incorporating humor and horror in a cognitive incongruity processing model.

A new model of horror's aesthetic enjoyment is detailed through the examination of plot, cinematic, and visual devices distinctive of the popular genre. According to this model, the audience derives pleasure from the films through confronting the aversive scenarios they communicate and rationalizing a denial of their personal applicability. The films then come to embody these acts of self-assertion and become objects of pride. How horror films can acquire necropolitical functions is also clarified. These functions, which exploit the power of anti-tragedy, downward social comparison, or vicarious emotion, work to remediate aggressive, ascetic, or revolutionary impulses in ways that are not injurious to the status quo. This book champions horror as a source of self-empowerment and beauty, but also attests to the potential harms of the genre. Forrest Adam Sopuck was awarded his Ph.D. in philosophy at McMaster University in 2015. He is a specialist in early modern philosophy by formation. His current work explores how Santayana's philosophical views contribute to contemporary metaphysical debates surrounding non-mereological composition, fundamentality, and colour.
