Diesem Imperium gelang es im 3. Jh. n. Chr. neben dem röm. Reich eine Herrschaft aufzubauen, zu etablieren und sogar über einen längeren Zeitraum zu halten. Wie es dazu kommen konnte und warum Rom und seine Kaiser lange nicht in der Lage waren, dies zu verhindern, sondern, im Gegenteil, maßgeblich, am Aufstieg der Herrscherfamilie beteiligt waren, möchte ich in diesem Referat klären. Dazu werde ich zunächst die historische Entwicklung Palmyras und den Aufstieg des Herrschers Odaenathus bearbeiten. Die beiden letzten Kapitel der Arbeit bilden die Herrschaft von Zenobia, Odaenathus ́ zweiter Frau, und ihren Untergang. Zuletzt werde ich eine Zusammenfassung geben und die Entwicklung kommentieren.

In den Wirren des 3. Jahrhunderts n.Chr. entstand im Osten des Romischen Reiches das Teilreich der Dynasten aus der syrischen Oasenstadt Palmyra, das sich nach und nach zu einem selbstandigen Machtfaktor in der Region entwickelte. Angesichts der Bedrohung durch die Perser errichtete der Exarch und Konsular Odaenathus in den 50er Jahren eine lokale Dynastie in Palmyra. In den 60er Jahren gelang es ihm, die Perser im Auftrag des Kaisers Gallienus zu besiegen und die Lage an der Ostgrenze zu stabilisieren. Seine Frau Zenobia etablierte nach seiner Ermordung als Regentin ihres Sohnes Vaballathus fur wenige Jahre eine Sonderherrschaft im romischen Orient. Bei der Ausweitung ihrer Macht geriet sie jedoch in einen Konflikt mit dem wieder erstarkten Kaisertum in Rom, der mit dem Untergang ihres Reiches endete. Diese Arbeit behandelt die Periode des palmyrenischen Teilreiches (260-272) in allen ihren Aspekten. Unter Heranziehung samtlicher Primarquellen sowie der antiken und orientalischen uberlieferung wird der Ablauf der Ereignisse rekonstruiert und das Phanomen des Teilreiches im Kontext der Krise des 3. Jahrhunderts - auch im Vergleich mit dem gallischen Sonderreich - untersucht. Die Auswertung zeigt die wichtige Funktion der Dynasten bei der Sicherung der Herrschaft Roms im Osten und unterstreicht den spezifisch romischen Charakter ihrer Regierung. Mit Registern. Die Dissertation behandelt die Entstehung des Sonderreichs der Dynasten aus der syrischen Oasenstadt Palmyra im Osten des Römischen Reiches zur Zeit der Soldatenkaiserzeit (235-285) und bietet eine umfassende Darstellung der Geschichte des palmyrenischen Teilreichs unter den Dynasten Odaenathus und Zenobia. Ziel des Autors ist es, die historische Rolle des Teilreichs in einer Gesamtschau der Krise des 3. Jahrhunderts auszuwerten. Die Krise, in der sich das Römische Reich zum Zeitpunkt der “Gründung” des palmyrenischen Teilreichs befand, war geprägt durch die veränderte Lage an der Ostgrenze, da die Sasaniden eine aggressive Politik gegen Rom führten. Hinzukamen permanente Einfälle äußerer Feinde an unterschiedlichen Grenzen und die Instabilität der kaiserlichen Regierung. Demzufolge fanden zahlreiche Usurpationen und schnelle Herrscherwechsel statt, in deren Zusammenhang sich eine regionale Herrschaft im Orient herausbildete. Im Jahr 260 wird der Romkaiser Valerianus durch den Sasaniden Shapur gefangengenommen; zur gleichen Zeit entsteht das palmyrenische Teilreich. Dieses palmyrenische Teilreich stellt ein Herrschaftsgebiet eines formal legitimierten Machthabers, der unter Anerkennung der Superiorität des Augustus in Rom kaiserliche Aufgaben in einem Reichsteil als Kaiserstellvertreter im Interesse der Sicherheit des Gebietes unternimmt, dar. Daher findet die Regentschaft formal im Auftrag des Kaisers statt. Das palmyrenische Teilreich präsentiert als Sonderreich die Problemlage und Bedrohung an den Grenzen des Römischen Reiches und insbesondere die Schwäche der Zentrale Rom. Um das Thema umfassend zu bearbeiten, nutzt Udo Hartmann die unterschiedlichsten Quellen und wertet die gesamte Forschungsliteratur aus, um eine Rekonstruktion der Ereignisse zu erstellen.

Palmyra: A History examines Palmyra, the city in the Syrian oasis of Tadmur, from its beginnings in the Bronze Age, through the classical period and its discovery and excavation, to the present day. It aims at reconstructing Palmyra’s past from literary accounts – classical and post-classical – as well as material evidence of all kinds: inscriptions, coins, art and of course the remains of Palmyra’s monumental architecture. After exploring the earliest inhabitation of Tadmur, the volume moves through the Persian and Hellenistic periods, to the city’s zenith. Under the Romans, Palmyra was unique among the cities of the empire because it became a political factor in its own right in the third century AD, when the Roman military was overpowered by Sassanian invaders and Palmyrene troops stepped in. Sommer’s assessment of Palmyra under Rome therefore considers how Palmyra achieved such an exceptional role in the Roman Near East, before its demise under the Umayyad Empire. The volume also examines the century-long history of archaeological and historical research at Palmyra, from its beginnings under Ottoman rule and the French mandate in the 1920s to the recent satellite based prospection carried out by German archaeologists. A closing chapter examines the occupation of the site by ISIS during the Syrian conflict, and the implications of the destruction there on the ruins, the archaeological finds and future investigations, and heritage in Syria more broadly. In social, economic, and cultural terms, the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire was vastly complex, which has fueled considerable debate among scholars concerning the nature of the interactions between Romans and natives in the Near East. Notions of imperialism, specifically "cultural" imperialism, frame much of the debate. Through a detailed analysis of Palmyrene identity and community formation, Andrew M. Smith II presents a social and political history of Roman Palmyra, the oasis city situated deep in the Syrian Desert midway between Damascus and the Euphrates river. This city-state is unique in the ancient world, since it began as a humble community, probably no more than an isolated village, and grew--due in part to its role in the caravan trade--into an economically powerful, cosmopolitan urban center of Graeco-Roman character that operated outside of Roman rule, yet under Roman patronage. The book therefore focuses on two aspects of Palmyrene civilization during the first three centuries of the Common Era: the emergence and subsequent development of Palmyra as a commercial and political center in the desert frontier between Rome and Parthia (and later Persia), and the "making" of Palmyrenes. This study is thus concerned with the creation, structure, and maintenance of Palmyrene identity and that of Palmyra as an urban community in a volatile frontier zone. The history of Palmyra's communal development would be wholly obscure were it not for the archaeological and epigraphic materials that testify to Palmyrene achievements and prosperity at home and abroad. These, complemented by the literary evidence, also provide insight into the relatively obscure historical process of sedentarization and of the relationships between pastoral and sedentary communities in the Roman Near East. In addition to examining Palmyra as a frontier community, the book will move beyond Syria to explore the development and maintenance of Palmyrene identity in diaspora settings in Italy, north Africa, and Europe.
