In der folgenden Arbeit werde ich zunächst den Ablauf des morgenländischen Schismas erläutern, die Annäherungsversuche in letzter Zeit beschreiben und abschließend aus meiner Sicht beurteilen, ob aus meiner Sicht die christliche Kirche eine gemeinsame Zukunft hat oder doch auf getrennten Wegen bleibt. Das Thema habe ich im Griechenland-Seminarkurs aus dem Grund gewählt, da das Schisma sich in Konstantinopel, dem heutigen Istanbul abgespielt hat. „Die Stadt“ ist bis heute für die meisten Griechen sehr wichtig. Außerdem wurde mit dem Schisma die Kirchenlandschaft, auch in Griechenland, entscheidend geprägt.

In der wissenschaftlichen und okumenischen Diskussion der letzten Jahrzehnte werden die gegenseitigen Bannfluche zwischen den Kirchen von Rom und Konstantinopel im Jahre 1054 immer noch mit dem Beginn des Morgenlandischen Schismas gleichgesetzt. Diese Studie kommt hingegen zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Trennung der beiden Kirchen ein lang andauernder Prozess war, der schon im 4. Jahrhundert einsetzte, sich im 11. Jahrhundert erheblich beschleunigte, aber erst zu Beginn des 12. Jahrhunderts irreversibel verfestigte. Der Entwicklung der Beziehungen zwischen Rom und Konstantinopel in der Zeit nach der Kaiserkronung Ottos I. (962), die der Freisinger Kirchenhistoriker Anton Michel als eigentlichen Beginn des Kirchenstreits ansah, bis zur unmittelbaren Vorgeschichte des Konflikts von 1054, wird hier erstmals seit Michels Arbeiten breiter Raum eingeraumt. Die Ereignisse werden interdisziplinar und in ihrer Interdependenz dargestellt. Das Buch bietet einen wichtigen Beitrag zum besseren Verstandnis des heutigen okumenischen Dialogs, aber auch der Spannungen zwischen der katholischen und der orthodoxen Kirche. Rechtzeitig zum 950. Jahrestag erscheint der Titel in zweiter.
