A concept of game is justified and unfolded that revolves around the lure and threat of the unexpected. Diese Frage wird in der aktuellen pädagogischen Debatte – insbesondere nach PISA 2000 und PISA 2003 – häufig gestellt, wenn es um die Entwicklung von Schule und Unterricht geht. Dennoch ist diese Frage nicht neu – bereits zu Zeiten der ersten Reformansätze zu Beginn des vergangenen Jahrhunderts setzte man sich intensiv mit den Grenzen und Chancen verschiedener Unterrichtsmethoden auseinander, darunter auch mit dem Spiel im Unterricht. Grenzen und Chancen – dass das Spiel im Unterricht als sinnvolle Unterrichtsmethode durchaus seine Grenzen hat, soll im Folgenden ein kurzer Erfahrungsbericht zeigen, der zugleich Anlass für diese Ausarbeitung war. Dass es jedoch auch anders sein kann, dass das Spiel im Unterricht durchaus bei entsprechender didaktischer Aufbereitung geeignet ist, um Lernprozesse anzuregen und zu fördern, soll im Anschluss dargestellt werden. Spielen im Unterricht – ein negatives Beispiel: Im Rahmen einer Hospitationsstunde in einer Grundschule beobachtete ich folgenden Unterrichtsablauf: Die Lehrerin leitete ihre Mathematikstunde mit einem Spiel ein, indem sie einen großen Schaumstoffwürfel zur Verfügung stellte und die Zahl „eins“ an die Tafel schrieb. Die Kinder sollten nun jeweils würfeln und die gewürfelte Zahl zu der an der Tafel stehenden hinzuaddieren. Würfelte das erste Kind eine fünf, sollte es also eine sechs an die Tafel schreiben und den Würfel weitergeben. Das folgende Kind musste nun wiederum die gewürfelte Zahl zur sechs addieren und so weiter. Dieses Spiel mag einem auf den ersten Eindruck als durchaus geeignet erscheinen, um die Fähigkeit der Addition der Kinder zu festigen, jedoch gestaltet sich das Ganze als denkbar schwierig, wenn der dazu notwendige Zehnerübergang noch gar nicht eingeführt wurde. Bereits beim zweiten Würfeln ergab sich die Aufgabe 8+4 und sämtliche Kinder riefen die abwegigsten Zahlen wie 78, 54 oder 26 in die Klasse. Die Lehrerin wartete geduldig ab, bis sie glaubte, irgendwo eine „zwölf“ vernommen zu haben, und schrieb diese dann unter eindringlichem Lob an die Tafel. Das ging solange weiter, bis die Kinder begonnen, sich mit dem Würfel gegenseitig zu schlagen; erst dann brach sie das Spiel ab. Nach einer halben Stunde standen ganze vier Zahlen an der Tafel. Anlass genug, sich einmal eingehender mit dem Spiel als Unterrichtsmethode zu beschäftigen.
