Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Archäologie, Note: 1,7, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (IKA - Institut für klassische Archäologie), Veranstaltung: Architektur im antiken Griechenland, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Arbeit zeigt sowohl die Baugeschichte als auch den architektonischen Aufbau des Theaters von Epidauros auf. Hierfür sollen die einzelnen architektonischen Raumteile des Theaters schrittweise benannt und erläutert werden, um so auf Besonderheiten und eventuelle Abweichungen der Spielstätte vom normativen Leitbild in Athen hinzuweisen. Um jedoch eben jene Baugeschichte, sowie die Architektur des Theaters von Epidauros nachvollziehen zu können, wird im Anschluss zunächst eine Erklärung des prototypischen, antik-griechischen Theaters vorangestellt werden, um so die gängigen Begrifflichkeit der typischen Theaterbauten einzuführen und evident zu machen. Die Ursprünge und entscheidenden Impulse des abendländischen Theaters gehen von der griechischen Antike aus. Den Ausgangspunkt des antiken Theaters bildeten kultische Chorgesänge, Tänze und Festlichkeiten zu Ehren des Gottes Dionysos - unter anderem Gott des Weines, der Fruchtbarkeit, des Wahnsinns und der Ekstase -, auch bekannt als Dionysien, die im Jahr 534 v. Chr. erstmals zu belegen sind. Somit ist der Beginn der Theaterkultur sowohl als kulturelle, aber auch als sakral und religiös geprägte Prozession zu begreifen. Das Fest dauerte acht Tage an und fand zwischen den Frühlingsmonaten des März und April statt. Ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Dionysien war vor allem der rhetorische und künstlerische Wettstreit (Agon) mehrerer Tragödiendichter. Ursprünglich wurden einfache, freie, nicht selten gepflasterte Plätze als Spielstätten verwendet.

Theater ist ein Begriff, der ein Geständnis eines festgehaltenen, von Künstlern umgesetztes Ereignis impliziert und mittels Schauspieler der Öffentlichkeit vorgeführt wird. Aufgrund seiner Komplexität kann das Theater jedoch kaum einfach definiert werden: Das Theater selbst beinhaltet sowohl Theaterkunst als auch den Ort, an dem diese realisiert wird sowie den sozialen Akt der Präsenz und die Folge der Performance. Wenn das literarische Schaffen mit der Interpretation der Darsteller auf der Bühne gespielt wird, entsteht die Theaterkunst und die Veranstaltung wird in einem bestimmten Raum platziert, der als Szene bezeichnet wird. Früher wurde die Szene in offenen Theatern oder Amphitheatern umgesetzt. Das griechische Wort "theatron" leitet sich vom Verb "Schauplatz" ab und lenkt in diesem Zusammenhang zunächst die Aufmerksamkeit. Aristoteles Definition des Theaters sieht zunächst die Handlung "dromenon", aus der das Wort Drama stammt, aber wie auch die Etymologie dieses Wort zeigt, wird hier mehr in der dramatischen Handlung gedacht, als in physischen Ereignissen auf der Bühne. Theater oder Schauspiel ist folglich heutigen Definitionen eine komplexe Kunst, die Elemente aller anderen Kunstarten umfasst: Literatur, Musik, Malerei, Skulptur und Architektur sowie Schauspielkunst.
