Einleitung: Aktuellen Zahlen zufolge lebt in jedem dritten Haushalt ein Haustier (Mars Heimtier-Studie 2013, S.26). Außerdem spielen Nutztiere, Arbeitstiere und Tiere als Co-Therapeuten in unserer heutigen Gesellschaft eine wichtige Rolle. Tiere sind Partner, Symbolträger, Kleidungs- und Nahrungslieferant oder auch Überbringer von Botschaften. Unter anderen in Filmen wie ‘Bä-ren Brüder’ von Walt Disney, indem die Jägerkultur als solche einer kritischen Hinterfragung ausgesetzt ist und die Symbiose von Mensch und Tier als ausdrückliche Möglichkeit hervorge-hoben wird. Jeder Mensch, der eine partnerschaftliche Beziehung zu einem Haustier pflegt oder gepflegt hat, weiß um seine positiven Wirkmomente, um die tiefgründige und so viel ehrlichere Kommunikation, die nach Meinung der Halter, stattfinden kann. Auch der folgende Textausschnitt aus Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Buch ‘Der kleine Prinz’ macht dieses Gefühl der Verbundenheit anschaulich deutlich: ‘Wer bist du?’ sagte der kleine Prinz. ‘Du bist sehr hübsch...’. ‘Ich bin ein Fuchs’, sagte der Fuchs. ‘Komm und spiel‘ mit mir’, schlug ihm der kleine Prinz vor. ‘Ich bin so traurig...’. ‘Ich kann nicht mit dir spielen’, sagte der Fuchs. ‘Ich bin noch nicht gezähmt!’. [...] Du bist nicht von hier, was suchst du?’. ‘Nein’, sagte der kleine Prinz, ‘ich suche Freunde. Was heißt ‚zäh-men‘?’. ‘Das ist eine in Vergessenheit geratene Sache’, sagte der Fuchs. ‘Es bedeutet: sich ‚vertraut machen‘. Resource-management decisions, especially in the area of protecting and maintaining biodiversity, are usually incremental, limited in time by the ability to forecast conditions and human needs, and the result of tradeoffs between conservation and other management goals. The individual decisions may not have a major effect but can have a cumulative major effect. Perspectives on Biodiversity reviews current understanding of the value of biodiversity and the methods that are useful in assessing that value in particular circumstances. It recommends and details a list of components-including diversity of species, genetic variability within and among species, distribution of species across the ecosystem, the aesthetic satisfaction derived from diversity, and the duty to preserve and protect biodiversity. The book also recommends that more information about the role of biodiversity in sustaining natural resources be gathered and summarized in ways useful to managers. Acknowledging that decisions about biodiversity are necessarily qualitative and change over time because of the nonmarket nature of so many of the values, the committee recommends periodic reviews of management decisions.
