Peter Berger untersucht anhand der Subjekt-Semantik, wie unsicher gewordene Semantiken auf literarische Texte gewirkt haben. Die im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts problematisch gewordene Semantik des ›starken Subjekts‹ als einem konsistenten, sprach- und handlungsmächtigen Ich, das im Drama lange ein Residuum gefunden hat, wurde ab circa 1890 in einer Reihe von Dramen auf seine Konsequenzen für die Gattung hin befragt. Es zeigt sich, dass diese semantische Verunsicherung neben der Theatermoderne zur großen Vielfalt dramatischer Formen um 1900 beigetragen hat. Zu den 17 untersuchten Texten zählen u.a. Stücke, die das Bewusstsein als Bühnenraum darstellen oder die Gründung theatraler Gemeinschaft an den ›realen‹ wie symbolischen Tod eines ›starken Subjekts‹ auf der Bühne binden. Peter Berger is concerned with the multi-faceted connections between drama and the subject ca. 1890 to 1920. The subject is hereby understood as a semantics that was at the foundation not only of German Idealism but also of the drama in the way it was codified in the German speaking world in the 19th century. When the semantics changed and drama opened to new pieces knowledge the now unstable semantics lead to new ways to produce dramatic texts. The author shows those new ways by analyzing 17 dramas that have been written in the period, emphasizing the big variety in style and quality in which these connections can be seen. It also stresses how developments in theatre and drama together, intertwined with semantic shifts, made modern drama possible.

Around 1900, German and Austrian actresses had allure and status, apparent autonomy, and unconventional lifestyles. They presented a complex problem socially and aesthetically, one tied to the so-called Woman Question and to the contested status of modernity. For modernists, the actress's socioeconomic mobility and defiance of gender norms opened space to contest social and moral strictures, and her mutability offered a means to experiment with identity. For conservatives, on the other hand, female performance could support antifeminist convictions and validate masculine authority by positing woman as nothing but a false surface shaped by productive male forces. Influential male-authored texts from the period thereby disavowed female subjectivity per se by equating "woman" and "actress." S. E. Jackson establishes the actress as a key figure in a discursive matrix surrounding modernity, gender, and subjectivity. Her central argument is that because the figure of the actress bridged such varied fields of thought, women who were actresses had a consequential impact that resonated in and far beyond the theater - but has not been explored. Examining archival sources such as theater reviews and writing by actresses in direct relation to canonical aesthetic and philosophical texts, The Problem of the Actress reconstructs the constitutive role that womenplayed on and off the stage in shaping not only modernist theater aesthetics and performance practices, but also influential strains of modern thought.

Die vorliegende Studie bietet den ersten systematischen Überblick über den expressionistischen Übersetzungskanon. Das erste Kapitel rekonstruiert unterschiedliche Facetten der Internationalität im Expressionismus, u. a. die Auseinandersetzung mit Nietzsches Denkfigur des ›guten Europäers‹ und mit Goethes Kategorie der ›Weltliteratur‹. Der zweite Teil, die Kernzone der Studie, ist dem expressionistischen Übersetzungskanon gewidmet. Die von Paul Raabe zusammengestellte Bibliographie wurde durch etliche neue Funde angereichert, nach Literaturräumen katalogisiert und exemplarisch ausgewertet. Berücksichtigt wurden zudem auch die in Zeitschriften und Anthologien der deutschsprachigen Avantgarde publizierten Übertragungen. Methodologischer Ausgangspunkt ist das formalästhetische Kreativitätspotential des literarischen Übersetzens, auf welches die Descriptive Translation Studies seit langem aufmerksam gemacht haben und das gerade im Falle von Autoren/-innen, die sich übersetzerisch betätigten, eklatant ist. Gerade die Einsicht in den manipulativen Charakter des literarischen Übersetzens und in die Spezifik ›translatorischer Autorschaft‹ macht den Weg frei, um die Dialektik von Import und Projektion nachzuvollziehen, die mit dem Übersetzen verbunden ist. Das dritte Kapitel schließlich visiert das Übersetzen in einer werkgenerativen Perspektive an. Im Vordergrund stehen intertextuelle und intermediale Filiationen, die sich aus der expressionistischen Rezeption fremdsprachiger Autoren/-innen ergeben. Exemplifiziert werden sie an den drei Gattungen Lyrik, Prosa und Drama sowie am Stummfilm und an der bildenden Kunst. Zugleich zeichnet die werkgenerative Perspektivierung des Übersetzungsmediums den diachronen Wandel des Expressionismus nach: vom anarchistisch-vitalistischen Frühexpressionismus, in dem Symbolisten wie Charles Baudelaire und Émile Verhaeren noch stark präsent waren, hin zum kommunionistischen Spätexpressionismus, der von dem messianischen Dostojewski-Kult dominiert wurde.
