In der vorliegenden Studie versucht der Autor nachzuvollziehen, was Michel Foucault dazu bewegte, das Subjekt und seine Bildung zur einzigen Konstante seiner langjährigen und vielschichtigen Arbeiten zu machen. Der Autor möchte verstehen, was Foucault meint, wenn er uns sinngemäß dazu drängt, uns nicht auf diese oder jene Weise subjektivieren zu lassen. Foucaults Idee von Freiheit soll dabei verstehbar gemacht werden, wofür der Fokus dieser Studie auf eine Gruppe von Menschen gelegt wurde, deren Freiheit prekär erscheint. Gemeint sind EmpfängerInnen von Arbeitslosengeld II bzw. von Hartz IV. Die gouvernementale Perspektive soll dabei zur Analyse eines neoliberalen Zeitgeistes dienen, in den sowohl der bedürftige Arbeitslose als auch ein Unternehmer eingebunden sind. In der speziellen Subjektivierungsweise des Unternehmers werden Parallelen zum Arbeitslosen aufgedeckt und in der speziellen prekären Freiheit des Erwerbslosen Parallelen zu unser aller Freiheit.

Die Marktfähigkeit der Volkskirche, ihre Steigerung, Kritik und theologische Legitimität sind Gegenstand kirchlicher Diskurse seit den frühen 90er Jahren. Die vorliegende Studie behandelt nicht die Themen dieser mit hoher Intensität geführten Debatten, sondern die Art ihrer Diskursivierung und fragt, wie Plausibilität und Akzeptanz hergestellt werden. Michel Foucaults Konzept von Subjekt und Macht und dessen aktuelle Reformulierung in den Gouvernementalitätsstudien bilden Basis und Rahmen der Analyse, die die Veränderungsprozesse der Kirche als Generierung eines „unternehmerischen Selbst“ rekonstruiert. Dabei bilden Debatten, wie sie im Deutschen Pfarrerblatt geführt wurden, Internetpräsentationen von Gemeinden und Kirchenkreisen und Techniken der Selbst- und Fremdführung die Grundlage der Untersuchung. Erkennbar wird, wie sich eine an ökonomischer Rationalität orientierte „Regierung des Selbst“ bei Person und Organisation auf eine kirchlich spezifische und eigensinnige Weise durchsetzt und dabei widersprüchliche Effekte erzeugt. Den zeitgenössischen kirchlichen Diskursen wird in wissenschaftlicher Selbstaufklärung auf diese Weise ein fokussierter Spiegel vorgehalten.

In 1975, Searle stated that one should speak idiomatically unless there is some good reason not to do so. Fillmore, Kay, and O’Connor in 1988 defined an idiomatic expression or construction as something that a language user could fail to know while knowing everything else in the language. Our language is rich in conversational phrases, idioms, metaphors, and general expressions used in metaphorical meaning. These idiomatic expressions pose a particular challenge for Machine Translation (MT), because their translation for the most part does not work literally, but logically. The present book shows how idiomatic expressions can be recognized and correctly translated with the help of a bilingual idiom dictionary (English-German), a monolingual (German) corpus, and morphosyntactic rules. The work focuses on the field of Example-based Machine Translation (EBMT). A theory of idiomatic expressions with their syntactic and semantic properties is provided, followed by the practical part of the book which describes how the hybrid EBMT system METIS-II is able to correctly process idiomatic expressions. A comparison of METIS-II with three commercial systems shows that idioms are not impossible to translate as it was predicted in 1952: “The only way for a machine to treat idioms is—not to have idioms!” This book furnishes plenty of examples of idiomatic phrases and provides the foundation for how MT systems can process and translate idioms by means of simple linguistic resources.
