Seit dem 1. 1. 1999 ist in Deutschland die Restschuldbefreiung von privaten Schulden gesetzlich möglich. Die Insolvenzordnung sieht hierfür ein pädagogisches Programm vor, mit dem sich die Überschuldeten als "redlich" (InsO §1) und somit der finanziellen Schuldbefreiung würdig erweisen. Was aber macht Redlichkeit im Kontext von Verschuldung aus? Die geforderten Haltungen zeigen eine neoliberale Prägung: Selbstaktivierung, Selbstauskunft, Eigenverantwortlichkeit. Anhand von narrationsanalytisch ausgewerteten Interviews mit Verschuldeten zeigt die Autorin, wie diese Anforderungen und damit die Schuld an den Schulden internalisiert werden. Mit der Untersuchung des Erzählens als diskursiv anschlussfähiger Akt der Selbstkonstitution leistet das Buch nicht zuletzt einen methodologischen Beitrag zur empirischen Subjektivierungsforschung.

Is there a moral economy of capitalism? The term "moral economy" was coined in pre-capitalist times and does not refer to economy as we know it today. It was only in the nineteenth century that economy came to mean the production and circulation of goods and services. At the same time, the term started to be used in an explicitly critical tone: references to moral economy were normally critical of modern forms of economy, which were purportedly lacking in morals. In our times, too, the morality of capitalism is often the topic of debate and controversy. "Moral Economies" engages in these debates. Using historical case studies from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries the book discusses the degree to which economic actions and decisions were permeated with moral, good-vs-bad classifications. Moreover it shows how strongly antiquity's concept of "embedded" economy is still powerful in modernity. The model for this was often the private household, in which moral, social, and economic behavior patterns were intertwined. The do-it-yourself movement of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries was still oriented towards this model, thereby criticizing capitalism on moral grounds.

With a focus on migrant narratives, or the storytelling about migration, this volume considers the ways in which migration is and has been shaped by individual and collective experiences of agency, belonging and community. Driven by an agenda of deep listening, each chapter presents a narrative directly derived from qualitative research, an outline of the methodological framing as well as narrative analysis. Through close attention to the narrative, its performative aspects and its ruptures and silences, authors identify patterns and material in the fabric of such telling and retelling of stories that open up new perspectives on the migrant experience. This book develops a methodology of "dwelling with stories" that allows for sustained and slow interrogation of the migrant experience and the accompanying decisions that shape narratives around mobility across borders. Its structure is innovative by emphasising the migrant voice and reflecting on the scholars’ positionality, while also offering new theoretical contributions that will advance the field of narrative analysis. The book will appeal to academics, students and practitioners in a wide range of subject areas within the humanities and social sciences, including anthropology, sociology, human geography, migration/refugee/diaspora studies and oral history. Being the first monographic study of this kind in the field of Assyriology, this book comprises an investigation of Ancient Mesopotamian concepts of the human person. Concentrating on Akkadian cuneiform texts from the 2nd and 1st millennium BC, the author examines the characteristics and attributes attached to human beings and the notions of the person as a composite being through a semantic analysis of Akkadian terms for the body, body parts and aspects of the self, which can be termed "souls".
