This book explores Elvis Presley's global transformation from a teenage rebel figure into one of the U.S.'s major pop-cultural embodiments from a historical perspective. It shows how Elvis's rise was part of an emerging transnational youth culture whose political impact was heavily conditioned by the Cold War. As well as this, the book analyses Elvis's stint as G.I. soldier in West Germany, where he acted as an informal ambassador for the so-called American way of life and was turned into a deeply patriotic figure almost overnight. Yet, it also suggests that Elvis's increasingly synonymous identity with U.S. culture ultimately proved to be a double-edged sword, as the excesses of his superstardom and personal decline seemingly vindicated long-held stereotypes about the allegedly materialistic nature of U.S. society. Von diesem Buch war sie von Anfang an faszieniert und konnte nicht aufhören zu lesen, Am Abend schickte ihre Mutter sie um neun Uhr ins Bett weil sie am nächsten Morgen zur Schule musste. Nachmittags wenn sie zu Hause war fing sie gleich wieder an zu lesen vor dem Abend essen nahm sie eine Taschenlampe und legte sie unten ihrem Bett. So, dachte sie wenn ich Heute abend ins Bett gehe und es dunkel ist kann ich immer noch lesen. Einmal dachte sie, möchte ich in meinem Leben Atlanta sehen, nur war Amerika, Georgia Atlanta so so weit weg, ach dachte sie ,ich weiss ja noch nicht einmal wo Georgia und Atlanta ist, wie sollte ich wohl dort hin kommen zwischen Deutschland und Americka ist doch auch das riesige Meer. Das sie einmal so weit weg gehen würde das glaubte sie nicht.

Political, economic, social, and cultural modernization dramatically transformed twentieth-century Austria. Innovative new methods of production and management, such as the assembly line, changed Austrian business after World War I, much as the Marshall Plan shaped the economy after World War II. At the same time, jazz, Hollywood movies, television programming, and mass commodities were as popular in Austria as elsewhere in Western Europe. Even political campaigns followed American trends. All this occurred despite the fact that in West Germany, American nostrums and models had been rejected, modified, or "translated" into milder versions. Ultimately, Austria was "Western Europeanized" when it joined the European Union in 1995. How Western are the Austrians? This volume analyzes trends toward Americanization and Westernization in Austria throughout the twentieth century. Reinhold Wagnleitner's lead essay studies the foreign politics of American pop culture. Anna Schober and Monika Bernold analyze the influence of Hollywood movies and television on postwar Austrian society. Reinhard Sieder follows changing discourses on family life, while Ingrid Bauer looks at American influences on Austrian women. Maria-Regina Kecht, Kurt Drexel, and Christina Hainzl follow the American impact on Austrian literature, opera, and art. Banker Anton Fink examines American banking and finance practices. Andr Pfrtner and Matthias Fuchs study the Americanization of Austrian business and tourism.
