In vielen Gesprachen mit Studenten und Kollegen bin ich auf ein starkes Interesse am Verhliltnis der Soziologie Max Webers zur marxistischen Theorietradition gestoBen. Dieses Interesse bekundet sich auch in der wachsenden Zahl von Arbeiten marxistischer Wissen schaftler (und zwar auch aus den sozialistischen Landern), die sich mit dem Werk Max Webers auseinandersetzen. Zugleich ist die marxistische Rezeption und Kritik dieses Werks jedoch im ganzen wie im einzelnen bis in die jiingste Zeit vielfach von Annahmen bestimmt, die eine fruchtbare Konfrontation der beiden sehr bedeutenden Grundlegungen der Sozialwissenschaft schwerwiegend behindern. Zur Vorbereitung und Beforderung zukiinftiger systematischer Ausein andersetzungen schien es mir daher niitzlich, einen einigermaBen vollstandigen, geordneten und kritischen Uberblick iiber die vorlie gende Beschaftigung mit Webers Werk aus marxistischer Sicht zu ge ben und dabei auch auf einige Autoren und Arbeiten hinzuweisen, deren vergleichsweise produktive Beitrage eine starkere Beachtung verdienen, als sie ihnen bisher zuteil wurde. Einige der traditionsreichen Interpretationspramissen, die die marxistische Weber-Kritik (bzw. den systematischen Vergleich der Marxschen und der Weberschen Idee von Sozialwissenschaft) so nachteilig beeinfluBt haben, werden in zunehmendem MaBe auch von marxistischen Theoretikern, und zwar selbst im Umkreis einer, orthodoxen' Selbstdefinition von Marxismus, in Frage gestellt. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist so auch als Versuch zu verstehen, diese An satze aufzunehmen und ihnen - gleichsam von der anderen Seite her - entgegenzuarbeiten. DaB dies in der Form einer umfanglichen und eingehenden Vergewisserung iiber die Geschichte der marxisti schen Weber-Rezeption und Weber-Kritik geschieht, sollte man nicht fiir einen iiberfliissigen Aufwand halten.

Basing his research on Gramsci’s theory of hegemony, Rehmann provides a comprehensive socio-analysis of Max Weber’s political and intellectual position in the ideological network of his time. Max Weber: Modernisation as Passive Revolution shows that, even though Weber presents his science as ‘value-free’, he is best understood as an organic intellectual of the bourgeoisie, who has the mission of providing his class with an intense ethico-political education. Max Weber's writings on the politics of Wilhelmine in Germany and the Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917 are much less well known than his contributions to historical and theoretical sociology, yet they are essential to any overall assessment of his thought. Drawing on these writings, still mostly untranslated, David Beetham offers the most comprehensive account available in English of Weber's political theory. The book explores Weber's central concern with the prospects for liberal Parliamentarism in authoritarian societies and in an age of mass politics and bureaucratic organization, and shows how this concern led him to a revision of democratic theory which is still influential. He demonstrates why, in logical and historical terms, discourses and traditions cannot actually be "founded" and why the term "founder" has little explanatory content. Equally, he takes issue with the notion of "canon" and argues that the analogy between the theological canon and sociological classic texts, though seductive, is mistaken.Although he questions the uses to which the concepts of founder, classic, and canon have been put, Baehr is not dismissive.
