Medard Boss and the Promise of Psychotherapy reacquaints counselors, psychotherapists and psychiatrists practicing today with the ideas of this remarkable figure in the history of twentieth-century clinical psychology who quietly but radically deviated from the mainstream of standard thinking and practice of his time. It presents an appreciation of Boss the man as essential for understanding what psychotherapy has become and envisioning its original purpose. This study revisits certain events in Boss's life that have not been sufficiently appreciated but deeply affected the development of his psychoanalysis without the psyche: da-seinanalysis (Daseinsanalyse). The book attempts to establish a terminology for therapy that is clear and consistent with Heidegger's thought. It provides a rich range of materials for study--texts in translations, a glossary of key terms, and a comprehensive international bibliography--that will be of use in developing an approach to therapy as Boss envisioned it. Medard Boss and the Promise of Psychotherapy concludes with some hints at just what such therapy might look like, one that is based on the author's own practice. It reflects what can be learned from Boss, both what he said and published and, perhaps more important, what was left unsaid.

Daseinsanalysis - the psychiatric and psychotherapeutic school of thought founded by Ludwig Binswanger and Medard Boss in the 1940s - had a huge impact on the development of existential therapies in the English-speaking world. This highly stimulating and lucid book gives a critical overview of the daseinsanalytic concepts of Binswanger and Boss and explains their key differences. Author Alice Holzhey-Kunz gives a systematic account of a new approach to mental suffering - based on Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Sartre - that never loses sight of Freud's fundamental insight into the hidden meaning of apparently senseless neurotic symptoms. She goes on to demonstrate that mental suffering is a 'suffering from our own being' before considering the therapeutic implications of the existential view of mental suffering, concluding that Freud's three technical rules provide the optimal conditions for understanding and engaging with these baffling existential experiences.

As the world shrinks and cultural lines blur, the need to synthesize important East and West ideas increases everyday. Surprisingly, upon examination, some of these culturally encapsulated concepts are actually similar in profound ways. To begin the investigation, this work examines the philosophical underpinnings of a phenomenological-existential theory of counseling developed by Martin Heidegger and Medard Boss known as daseinsanalysis. The discussion includes the scientific-technological dimming of Being and the oblivion of Being followed by both inauthentic and authentic modes of Dasein. From there, the discussion moves toward the therapeutic elements of practice inherent in daseinsanalysis including phenomenological awareness, the existentials, anxiety and guilt, possibilities and freedom, and the phenomenological analysis of dreams. Next, the work integrates the theory of daseinsanalysis with the Eastern philosophy and religion of Taoism. This integration addresses the principles of Tao, Yin and Yang, wei-wu-wei, and p u. The comparison reveals parallels along key philosophical points between Taoism and daseinsanalysis.

Since its publication, Existence has been regarded as the most important, complete, and lucid account of the existentialist approach to psychology. From the works of the leading spokesmen of the existential analytic movement, the editors have selected classic case histories and other writings to define the approach that seeks to understand mental illness, in the words of Rollo May, "...not as deviations from the conceptual yardstick of this or that psychiatrist...but as deviations in the structure of the particular patient's existence, the disruptions of his condition humane."

Zollikon Seminars written by Martin Heidegger and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Long awaited and eagerly anticipated, this remarkable volume allows English-speaking readers to experience a profound dialogue between the German philosopher Martin Heidegger and the Swiss psychiatrist Medard Boss. A product of their long friendship, Zollikon Seminars: Protocols-Conversations-Letters chronicles an extraordinary exchange of ideas. Heidegger strove to transcend the bounds of philosophy while Boss and his colleagues in the scientific community sought to better understand their patients and their world. Boss approached Heidegger during World War II asking for help in reflective thinking on the nature of Heidegger's work. A correspondence ensued, followed by visits that soon became annual two-week meetings in Boss's home in Zollikon, Switzerland. The protocols from these seminars, recorded by Boss and reviewed, corrected, and supplemented by Heidegger himself, make up one part of this volume. They are augmented by Boss's record of the conversations he had with Heidegger in the days between seminars and by excerpts from the hundreds of letters that Heidegger wrote to Boss between 1947 and 1971. For the first time, Heidegger makes the fundamental ideas of his philosophy accessible to nonphilosophers. Heidegger confronts certain philosophical/psychological theories, including Freudian psychoanalysis, Ludwig Binswanger's and Boss's forms of Dasein (existential) psychoanalysis, and Indian philosophy that he has never previously addressed. The lectures, correspondence, and conversations span twenty-five years, offering an ongoing view of Heidegger's career and philosophical development. A richly detailed picture of one of the century's great philosophers, Zollikon Seminars is the best and clearest introduction to Heidegger's philosophy available.
