Excerpt from The Material Culture of Pueblo Bonito The story of the vanished Indian culture of Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, set forth in fascinating details in this volume, is the outgrowth of a program of archeological research initiated by the National Geographic Society in 1920. In that year, at the request of the Society's Research Committee, Neil M. Judd, then curator of archeology of the U. S. National Museum, conducted a preliminary survey of the vast abandoned "apartment house" of Pueblo Bonito. Following this survey, and upon Mr. Judd's recommendation, the Society embarked upon an extensive program of excavations from 1921 through 1927 which produced the material for this report. Mr. Judd's painstaking investigations have made it possible to reconstruct to a remarkable degree the everyday life and culture of the people who lived in Pueblo Bonito approximately 1,000 years ago. These prehistoric Indians inhabited the site at least as early as A.D. 919, and attained their "Golden Age" after A.D. 1000, about the time of the Norman conquest of Britain and the First Crusade. They continued to occupy the Pueblo for at least another century; then some 300 years before the coming of Columbus they disappeared without trace. Our detailed knowledge of the actual dates when Pueblo Bonito was occupied was furnished by two other expeditions of the National Geographic Society, in 1928 and 1929, led by Dr. Andrew Ellicott Douglass, director of Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona. Dr. Douglass was engaged at that time in the study of climatic cycles as revealed in the varying thickness of the annual growth rings of trees, and the possible relation of such cycles to the 11-year sunspot cycle. Dr. Douglass made careful measurements of the growth rings in logs used as supporting beams in the Pueblo Bonito structures, and then was able to fit them into an unbroken sequence of tree rings extending back into the past from the present day. Thus he was able to establish the dates when many of the Pueblo Bonito beams had been cut from living forests. His monograph, "Dating Pueblo Bonito and Other Ruins of the Southwest," appeared in 1935 as the first of several papers presenting the scientific results of the Pueblo Bonito expeditions. After spending nearly three decades researching among these trees, Sylvester Allred shares his wealth of experience in the southwestern ponderosa pine forests with the world in Ponderosa. Ponderosa is the first of its kind to provide an introduction to the natural and human histories of the ponderosa pine forests of the Southwest that is accessible to all who wish to enjoy the forests. The book offers knowledge on elemental aspects of the forests, such as the structure of the trees, as well as theoretical perspectives on issues such as climate change. Included are discussions of biogeography, ecology, and human and natural history, illustrated by over fifty color photographs throughout. Allred presents his observations as if he is recalling his thoughts over the course of a walk in a ponderosa pine forest. His imagery-saturated prose provides an informal and enjoyable approach to discovering the history and environment of the ponderosa pine. Tree Rings And Climate written by H Fritts and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-02 with Science categories.

Tree Rings and Climate deals with the principles of dendrochronology, with emphasis on tree-ring studies involving climate-related problems. This book looks at the spatial and temporal variations in tree-ring growth and how they can be used to reconstruct past climate. Factors and conditions that appear most relevant to tree-ring research are highlighted. Comprised of nine chapters, this book opens with an overview of the basic biological facts and principles of tree growth, as well as the most important terms, principles, and concepts of dendrochronology. The discussion then shifts to the basic biology governing the response of ring width to variation in climate; systematic variations in the width and cell structure of annual tree rings; and the significance of tree growth and structure to dendroclimatology. The movement of materials and internal water relations of trees are also considered, along with photosynthesis, respiration, and the climatic and environmental system. Models of the growth-climate relationships as well as the basic statistics and methods of analysis of these relationships are described. The final chapter includes a general discussion of dendroclimatographic data and presents examples of statistical models that are useful for reconstructing spatial variations in climate. This monograph will be of interest to climatologists, college students, and practitioners in fields such as botany, archaeology, hydrology, oceanography, biology, physiology, forestry, and geophysics.

Enduring Roots written by Gayle Brandow Samuels and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-12-01 with Nature categories.

Trees are the grandest and most beautiful plant creations on earth. From their shade-giving, arching branches and strikingly diverse bark to their complex root systems, trees represent shelter, stability, place, and community as few other living objects can. Enduring Roots tells the stories of historic American trees, including the oak, the apple, the cherry, and the oldest of the world’s trees, the bristlecone pine. These stories speak of our attachment to the land, of our universal and eternal need to leave a legacy, and demonstrate that the landscape is a gift, to be both received and, sometimes, tragically, to be destroyed. Each chapter of this book focuses on a specific tree or group of trees and its relationship to both natural and human history, while exploring themes of community, memory, time, and place. Readers learn that colonial farmers planted marker trees near their homes to commemorate auspicious events like the birth of a child, a marriage, or the building of a house. They discover that Benjamin Franklin’s Newtown Pippin apples were made into a pie aboard Captain Cook’s Endeavour while the ship was sailing between Tahiti and New Zealand. They are told the little-known story of how the Japanese flowering cherry became the official tree of our nation’s capital—a tale spanning many decades and involving an international cast of characters. Taken together, these and many other stories provide us with a new ways to interpret the American landscape. “It is my hope,” the author writes, “that this collection will be seen for what it is, a few trees selected from a great forest, and that readers will explore both—the trees and the forest—and find pieces of their own stories in each.”
