I was fortunate to have spent my childhood in pre-1947 India, immersed in a leisurely and privileged culture at a time when people did not rely on television and radio for entertainment but enjoyed the company of friends and family for conversation and social interaction. We had a large extended family, going back many generations in India and, as was the custom, we entertained frequently and often had family and friends as house guests to stay. There was much re-telling of old and loved family tales, and new stories were welcome additions to the existing story pool. Gossip, chatter, current affairs debates, ghost stories, songs and parlourgames were our means of passing the time in an enjoyable way. This book is written in affectionate memory of the Raj of my childhood, which was the only real "homeland" my family had ever known, and of the Indian people who were our work colleagues, neighbours, friends and in some cases relatives.

The apparent glamour of the Indian Raj continues to fascinate long after the British quit the subcontinent. But along with the beauty of the Indian landscape and the privilege of servants and holidays in hill stations, British women in that vanished world faced challenges and fears that came from being an alien ruling minority. These women were at the heart of the imperial enterprise. It was their role to support the mens work, raise the children and attempt to replicate British society thousands of miles from home. They struggled in the face of heat, illness, loneliness and boredom as well as different customs, languages and religions. The distinguished historian and bestselling author Margaret MacMillan, drawing on letters and memoirs, novels and interviews, brings vividly to life their experiences humdrum, extraordinary, light-hearted, tragic at the height of the Raj, from the 1850s to Indian independence in 1947.

This study shows how, by supporting their husbands, British women held together the greatest empire on earth, often to their private cost and pain. Based on a very rich collection of letters, diaries, and photographs, it is a story of class, snobbery, racism, but also of suffering and courage, told in a vivid and moving way.

Isabel, born into the British Raj, and Asha, a young Hindu girl, both consider India their home. Through mischance and accident their stories intersect and circumstances will bring them from the bustling city of Delhi to the shores of the Andaman Islands, from glittering colonial parties to the squalor and desperation of a notorious prison; and into the lives of men on opposing sides of the fight for self-government.As the shadow of the Second World War falls across India, Isabel, caught up in growing political violence, has to make impossible choices - fighting for her love for India, for the man she yearns for, and for her childhood Indian friend, in the face of loyalty to her own country.

Children Of The Raj written by Vyvyen Brendon and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-30 with History categories.

Vyvyen Brendon's evocative, at times heart-tugging book, runs from the 18th century and the East India Company, through the Afghan wars, the Indian mutiny and the more settled era of the Queen Empress, and culminates in the conflict leading to Britain's hurried exit in 1947. Its subject is the young progeny of traders, soldiers, civil servants, missionaries, planters, engineers and what should be done with them. Until the coming of air travel these children often only saw their parents every few years. Then there were the children born of Anglo-Indian marriages and affairs. Sent back to Britain they were often reviled as 'darkies', 'a touch of the tar-brush'. And then there were the children educated in India. Brendon reveals appalling stories of abuse at the hands of servants. What frequently unites Brendon's wildly different subjects is their loneliness--drawing on letters, diaries, memoirs and interviews, she portrays children who had to discipline themselves to adapt (often ingeniously) to unfamiliar cultures, far away from family and forced to spend termtime in boarding schools and holidays with unfamiliar families.

An unputdownablc factual account of the zenana world of the rajas and sultans of India, concentrating on the firangi bahus and begums of this veiled world of myths and folklores. The book gives us the stories of twenty different European women who broke society's rules to marry the 'heathen' Indian princes. Who were these women? Were they gold-diggers, or hopeless romantics hoping to enact their own Cinderella fairy-tale? Did they live happily ever after? Set against the backdrop of India's independence struggle, the book has a delicious and potent mix of flavours - the end of the British Raj and the downfall of the pompous and extravagant Indian aristocracy.
