The twelve original and two classic essays present provocative and timely thinking on Mamet's play and screenplay and offer a dialectic on performance and structure. The commentaries take diverse critical approaches to such subjects as feminism, pernicious nostalgia, ethnicity, the mythological land motif, the discourse of anxiety, gendered language, and Mamet's vision of America, providing insights and perpectives on the theatricality, originality, and universality of the work. Also includes an interview with Sam Mendes. No index. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Winner of the 1984 Pulitzer Prize, David Mamet's scalding comedy is about small-time, cutthroat real esate salesmen trying to grind out a living by pushing plots of land on reluctant buyers in a never-ending scramble for their fair share of the American dream. Here is Mamet at his very best, writing with brutal power about the tough life of tough characters who cajole, connive, wheedle, and wheel and deal for a piece of the action -- where closing a sale can mean a brand new cadillac but losing one can mean losing it all. This masterpiece of American drama is now a major motion picture starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Alex Baldwain, Jonathan Pryce, Ed Harris, and Kevin Spacey.

"The finest American playwright of his generation" (Sunday Times) Glen Garry Glen Ross (also made in to a film starring Jack Lemmon and Al Pacino) "his superb play about real estate salesmen in a cut-throat sales competition" (New Society); in Prairie du Chien a railway carriage speeding through the Wisconsin night is the setting for a violent story of obsessive jealousy, murder and suicide, told within shooting distance of a card-hustler and his victim. "A short poignant study in violence and the twin drives of love and money, told with hypnotic power thorugh a travelling raconteur" (City Limits); The Shawl shows a clairvoyant wondering whether to cheat a bereaved woman of her inheritance and "confirms Mamet's place as about the best living writer of vivid American dialogue" (Daily Telegraph). Set in the cut-throat world of Hollywood, Speed-the-Plow sees two old-time movie collaborators manipulate the aspirations of a young woman who will do anything to attain her dream of success "a brilliant black comedy, a dazzling dissection of Hollywood cupidity." “Mamet’s intellectual rigor is evident on every page. There is not a wasted word” in this novel based on the wrongful murder conviction of a Jewish man (Time Out). In 1913, a young woman was found murdered in the National Pencil Factory in Atlanta. The investigation focused on the Jewish manager of the factory, Leo Frank, who was subsequently forced to stand trial for the crime he didn’t commit and railroaded to a life sentence in prison. Shortly after being incarcerated, he was abducted from his cell and lynched in front of a gleeful mob. In vividly re-imagining these horrifying events, Pulitzer Prize–winning author David Mamet inhabits the consciousness of the condemned man to create a novel whose every word seethes with anger over prejudice and injustice. The Old Religion is infused with the dynamic force and the remarkable ear that have made David Mamet one of the most acclaimed voices of our time. It stands beside To Kill a Mockingbird as a powerful exploration of justice, racism, and the “rush to judgment.” “Mamet’s philosophical intensity, concision, and unpredictable narrative strategies are at their full power.” —The Washington Post “In this historical novel, playwright, filmmaker, and novelist Mamet presents disturbing cameos of Jewish uncertainty in a Christian world.” —Library Journal “The horror of the story is beautifully countered by the unusual grace of Mamet’s prose.” —The Irish Times

Language And Power Play As Action Drivers In Glengarry Glen Ross And Oleanna written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Conflict (Psychology) in literature categories.

It is difficult for an actor to perform in David Mamet's plays, because of the little physical action in the play. With this study, the dissertant intended to unpack the "action" in Mamet's plays and to conceive a better understanding of just how he creates conflict. Mamet's plays often contain very little physical (external) action and he uses language to drive the scenes and create dramatic conflict. His particular use of language, such as its construction, the use of vernacular (reproducing speech patterns of different social groups) and vulgarities and obscenities, has created controversy, but it has also earned him praise as a dramatist. By applying textual analysis to Glengarry Glen Ross and Oleanna I investigated Mamet's use of language and power play to create conflict and drive the action. Amongst other features, I analysed the structure, themes, characters, plot and language of these plays. Through the analysis it was discovered that, in both plays, language creates conflict. In Glengarry Glen Ross this is embodied in verbal abuse and in Oleanna through confusion and power. This conflict creates action that ultimately drives the plays towards their respective climaxes. As discovered, the characters and their relationships play a pivotal part in creating action. The character with more power dominates verbally and this too creates action and conflict.

Race Sparks fly when three lawyers – two black and one white – and a defendant clash over the issue of race and the American judicial system. Drawing on one of the most highly charged issues of American history, David Mamet forces us to confront deep-seated prejudices and barely healed wounds in this unflinching examination of the lies we tell ourselves and the truths we unwillingly reveal to others. November It's November in a Presidential election year and incumbent Charles Smith's chances for re-election are looking unlikely. Approval ratings are down, his money's running out, and nuclear war might be imminent. But Chuck isn't ready to give up just yet. November is a hilarious take on the state of contemporary America. The Anarchist Cathy is a woman who has served 35 years of a life sentence for killing a policeman in a botched robbery. Her prison officer Ann must decide whether or not to grant her parole. Mamet once again employs his signature verbal jousting in this battle of two women over freedom, power, money, and religion.
