King David’s life has all of the ingredients of an action packed Box Office hit. He went from being a keeper of his father’s sheep to being Israel’s greatest king. He is one of the most recognized people we learn about in the Bible. David had many victories in his life, but he also made many mistakes. What makes David such a remarkable person is that he cared more about what God’s opinion of him was that what people’s opinion was. After reading this book, we find out that king David was no different than we are. We all have victories in our Iife, but we also make many mistakes; but we like David can be “a man after God’s own heart.” Being a perfect Christian doesn’t mean that we never make a mistake, It simply means that no matter what circumstances arise, we keep our faith in God.

The exciting field of biblical archaeology has revolutionized our understanding of the Bible -- and no one has done more to popularise this vast store of knowledge than Israel Finkelstein and Neil Silberman, who revealed what we now know about when and why the Bible was first written in The Bible Unearthed. Now, with David and Solomon, they do nothing less than help us to understand the sacred kings and founding fathers of western civilization. David and his son Solomon are famous in the Bible for their warrior prowess, legendary loves, wisdom, poetry, conquests, and ambitious building programmes. Yet thanks to archaeology's astonishing finds, we now know that most of these stories are myths. Finkelstein and Silberman show us that the historical David was a bandit leader in a tiny back-water called Jerusalem, and how -- through wars, conquests and epic tragedies like the exile of the Jews in the centuries before Christ and the later Roman conquest -- David and his successor were reshaped into mighty kings and even messiahs, symbols of hope to Jews and Christians alike in times of strife and despair and models for the great kings of Europe. A landmark work of research and lucid scholarship by two brilliant luminaries, David and Solomon recasts the very genesis of western history in a whole new light.

For almost two centuries biblical scholars have operated in the shadow of de Wette's judgement that the books of Chronicles are derived from and (hence?) historically inferior to the books of Samuel - Kings. Without disputing de Wette's historical feel for the unreliability of the Chronicler, Graeme Auld suggests a fresh model for understanding the interrelationships of these two accounts of the Bible's kings: each had supplemented, quite independently of the other, a common inherited text that had told the story of Judah's kings from David to the fall of Jerusalem. He reconstructs and explains this shared source. This fresh study shows that the author of Samuel-Kings was no less partisan than the Chronicler when retelling older traditions of Israel and Judah. Sometimes the two books diverge considerably, as over King Hezekiah. At other times the differences are slighter, yet quite as telling: after forty shared verses of petition in Solomon's prayer at the dedication of the Jerusalem Temple, the version in Kings ends by appealing to the Exodus and mentioning Moses by name; but Chronicles, as often more traditionally, names David and quotes a Psalm.

Story Of King David written by David M. Gunn and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978-08-01 with Religion categories.

Gunn sets out his aim in this book to foster a fresh understanding of the narrative about David in 2 Samuel and 1 Kings, commonly known as the 'Succession Narrative,' by arguing for its fuller appreciation of its nature as a story. Gunn reviews the different hypotheses on the genre of the so-called Court History/Succession Narrative and concludes that the purpose of this story is to entertain. The work is to be considered primarily artistic and literary, and the rhetorical devices in the story are reliant on traditional motifs and devices.
