The Day of the Longbow is the tale of Bill Sherwood and his friends who encounter Oberon, a wise and powerful wizard from the parallel universe of Avonia. Avonia is a medieval world similar to earth’s eleventh and twelfth centuries. Many things are the same as our own past, but many are different. The bow and arrow were never invented in the Avonia universe. These are the adventures of Bill Sherwood and his fellow archers, sought out by Oberon to take their longbows to Avonia and help stave off the attacks from the savage Nordics. Bill and his men go back with Oberon to his medieval world to help King Stephen and the realm of Avonia fight the Nordic invasion. Theirs is not merely a fight to win but a battle for their survival. Knights of the realm, castles, magic, time travel, evil warriors, and true love...Bill and his band of archers will find it all in Avonia and be forever changed.

A powerful and iconic weapon, the longbow dominated Medieval warfare in England. From the Hundred Years War to Hastings, Robin Hood and Agincourt, the longbow was also used to a devastating effect in naval battles. Kings of England encouraged the use of the longbow by sponsoring tournaments with prizes for successful archers. All other sports were banned on a Sunday except for archery. At any particular time, England would have a large pool of experienced archers ready to be called up for war. Each English shire had to provide the king with a certain number of trained archers per year – and this was enforced by law. But where did the longbow originate and why did it come to dominate archery in this way? The Pitkin Guide to Longbows and Archery explores these questions and looks at the ordinary men who used bows and arrows as soldiers and in their day-to-day lives.

Historians made many assumptions about the medieval period that under further scrutiny had proven ill-conceived. Into the twentieth century, a mythology existed around the "knight in shining armor." Students understood that knights wore armor so heavy that they could barely move under its weight and that these less-civilized men from another era could fight for hours with heavy, swords that relied on muscle rather than skill to win the day. Modern man, with the enlightenment and science, did away with this last vestige of the dark ages and we progressed to a more sophisticated way of life. These ideas fell apart under the closer scrutiny provided by scholars in the later part of the twentieth century as they sought to revise our understanding by both assimilating the knowledge contained in primary sources as having great value and experimenting with archeological evidence and historical reconstructions to provide people six and seven centuries removed a better measure of understanding. This urge to revise and revisit also saw modern historians reevaluate one of the biggest myths to come from the late medieval period, the supremacy of the English longbow over the armor of the French knight. Dr. Kelly DeVries led the charge, reexamining the abilities of the longbowman when confronted with the knight and found the old ideas mistaken. Arrows lacked the power to penetrate armor, and it was infantry tactics that won the day. Dr. Clifford Rogers disagreed, as did many other scholars. This work hopes to find some level of understanding in a very muddied debate by comparing current knowledge to what armor was worn between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in Western Europe.

What images pop into your head when you hear the word "longbow"? A swash-buckling Robin Hood and his Merry Men? Legolas, the elfish archer from The Lord of the Rings trilogy? Green Arrow, the crime-fighting, comic book bowman? These were the images that often popped into Nick Viau's head whenever he heard mention of the term. He'd been attracted to all things bow and arrow throughout his youth but wasn't sure why. Then, at the age of 27, the stress of a busy work week thrust him deep into the pages of an archery-infused comic book, where he was introduced to Howard Hill, the famous longbow-wielding archer and hunter.Through Hill, Nick discovered the longbow and was thrilled to find a community of present-day enthusiasts still shooting and hunting with it. Before long, he had one of his own and was looking to join them. Life and Longbows isn't your average hunting book. It is a memoir of self-discovery that watches Nick grow from a wide-eyed, adventure-seeking dreamer to a seasoned archer and bowhunter.

The English military ascendancy which lasted from the mid-14th to the early 16th century was founded upon defensive tactics based on the use of the longbow. This weapon, distinctive in that it was used by English forces alone, was probably the most effective missile weapon of the Late Middle Ages: its arrow had the same penetrative ability as a modern day bullet and the bow's rate of fire was not equalled by any weapon used by English forces until the adoption of the Lee Enfield rifle at the beginning of the 20th century. The English longbowmen's involvement in wars such as the War of the Roses (1455-1485) and One Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) is discussed.
