This book attempts to study causal relationships between several measures of financial sector growth and deepening and economic growth in the Indian context, using annual data from 1950-51 to 2008-09. The relationship between financial sector development and economic growth can be analyzed from three angles: financial deepening leading to economic growth, economic growth leading to financial deepening and a bi-directional relationship between the two. The book gives a detailed description of the data used in this study, book further describes the empirical methodology, the main tool of analysis are the method of Granger causality, Error correction Mechanism, Impulse Response Function (IRF) and Co-integration explained. The data used are annual data from Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy; Statistical Tables Relating To Banks in India, Banking Statistics, NSE News (Private Circulation), Fact Book of NSE, BSE annual reports, and Handbook of Statistics on The Indian Security Market by SEBI. All the variables were tested for unit roots using the Dickey-Fuller test (1979) which have been referred from the Enders (2003) to find out stationarity and study considers critical values at 5 per cent significance level. Unit root test is performed by using the R software and difference operators have been indicated with the numerical value. This study applied Granger causality test to verify causality between various variables of financial deepening and Gross Domestic Product and Per Capita Income as indicators of economic growth. It is shown that for a wide range of financial variables, financial deepening does indeed cause economic growth. However, the causality is not unidirectional; in a feedback relationship, economic growth too causes financial sector deepening. The study supports the claims of all three schools.

Daniel Coit Gilman, a Yale-trained geographer who first worked as librarian at his alma mater, led a truly remarkable life. In Daniel Coit Gilman and the Birth of the American Research University, Michael T. Benson argues that Gilman's enduring legacy will always be as the father of the modern research university—a uniquely American invention that remains the envy of the entire world. In the past half-century, nothing has been written about Gilman that takes into account his detailed journals, reviews his prodigious correspondence, or considers his broad external board service. This book fills an enormous void in the history of the birth of the "new" American system of higher education, especially as it relates to graduate education. The late 1800s, Benson points out, is one of the most pivotal periods in the development of the American university model; this book reveals that there is no more important figure in shaping that model than Daniel Coit Gilman. Benson focuses on Gilman's time deliberating on, discussing, developing, refining, and eventually implementing the plan that brought the modern research university to life in 1876. This book presents the proceedings of the 24th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2020), held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, from 29 August to 8 September 2020. The conference was postponed from June, and much of it conducted online due to the COVID-19 restrictions. The conference is one of the principal occasions for researchers and practitioners of AI to meet and discuss the latest trends and challenges in all fields of AI and to demonstrate innovative applications and uses of advanced AI technology. The book also includes the proceedings of the 10th Conference on Prestigious Applications of Artificial Intelligence (PAIS 2020) held at the same time. A record number of more than 1,700 submissions was received for ECAI 2020, of which 1,443 were reviewed. From the viewpoint of an "industrial" this book is most welcome, as one of the most significant demonstrations of the maturity of Prolog. Logic programming is a fascinating area in computer science, which held for years - and still does - the promise of freeing ourselves from programming based on the "Von Neumann" machine. In addition computer programming has long been for solid theoretical foundations. While conventional engineering, dealing mainly with "analogical complexity", developed over some hundred years a complete body of mathematical tools, no such toolset was available for "digital complexity". The only mathematical discipline which deals with digital complexity is logic and Prolog is certainly the operational tool which comes closest to the logical programming ideal. So, why does Prolog, despite nearly twenty years of development, still appear to many today to be more of a research or academic tool, rather than an industrial programming language? A few reasons may explain this: First, I think Prolog suffers from having been largely assimilated into - and thus followed the fate of - Artificial Intelligence. Much hype in the late 1980 created overexpectations and failed to deliver, and the counterreaction threw both AI and Prolog into relative obscurity. In a way, maybe this is a new chance for the Prolog community: the ability to carry out real work and progress without the disturbance of limelights and the unrealistic claims of various gurus. Second, programming in Prolog is a new experience for computer professionals.
