In de jaren '50 van de zestiende eeuw bestierde 'Trijn pottebackers' een pottenbakkerij buiten de Delftse Ketelpoort. Het aantal pottenbakkerijen in Delft nam snel toe van twee in 1575 naar vier in 1600. Rond 1630 bereikte de expansie van deze bedrijfstak haar hoogtepunt met zeven pottenbakkerijen. De pottenbakkers produceerden 'alrehande aerdewerck' voor de lokale markt: kookpotten op drie pootjes (met één of twee oren), tuit-, druip-, water- en mospotten, testen, lollepotten, vergieten, braadpannen, deksels, kneppelen en aardbeienpotten. Het aardewerk was vooral bestemd om in te koken, uit te eten of drinken. Op grond van haar kleur en meest voorkomende vorm (kookpot), wordt dit type aardewerk aangeduid als rood pottengoed. Marie-Cornélie Roodenburg beschrijft uitvoerig en in heldere bewoordingen de pottenbakkersnering in Delft. Zij laat zien hoe deze bedrijfstak georganiseerd was, welke samenhang er bestond tussen produktie en afzetmarkt en beschrijft de economische en sociale positie van de pottenbakker. Hierbij komt ook de rol van het St. Michielsgilde, waarvan de pottenbakkers verplicht lid waren, aan de orde. Zij baseert zich vooral op archivalische bronnen, maar maakt ook gebruik van bronnen betreffende de techniek van het pottenbakken, het bodemarchief, vakkennis uit het recente verleden en heden en klimatologische documentatie. De produktie van rood pottengoed was op ambachtelijke leest geschoeid. De eigenaar-pottenbakker werkte met vrouw en kinderen in zijn bedrijf. Knechten werden alleen aangenomen als er te weinig familieleden waren. Als hun man stierf, zetten de vrouwen het bedrijf zelf voort. Om de inkomsten te verhogen, werd de aanwezige warmte van de oven in de bedrijfsopstal benut om hout, zeil en touw te drogen. De familie Van Bodegem had tevens een teerstoof voor het impregneren van touw en zeil. Adriaen Cornelisz. Cater verkocht ook aardewerk van elders en glaswerk en leverde grondstoffen aan plateelbakkers, de makers van het bekende Delfts blauwe aardewerk. Zo verdienden de meeste pottenbakkers een goed belegde boterham. In de jaren '20 van de zeventiende eeuw verloor de kookpot haar dubbelfunctie: men ging eten uit schotels en borden gemaakt van Delfts plateel of tin. Ook het sterkere pottengoed uit Bergen op Zoom en kook- en bakgerei van niet-keramisch materiaal vormden geduchte concurrenten. Ondanks protectionistische maatregelen van het Delftse stadsbestuur trad de neergang na 1635 definitief in.

She traces the migration of printers from the Southern Netherlands to Leiden and observes how they congregated within the city and sought contracts with the city's new university. Vanaf de eerste helft van de zestiende eeuw concentreerde de Baltische graanhandel zich in Amsterdam. Daar werd het graan niet alleen door korendragers gelost, maar ook in open zakken naar de speciale korenpakhuizen gedragen. Daarna droegen zij de zware last via steile ladders naar de bestemde zolderverdieping, waar het werd opslagen. Aan deze veelal ongeschoolde en loonafhankelijke havenarbeiders heeft Amsterdam in niet geringe mate haar welvaart te danken. De graanhandel was immers de ‘moedernegotie’ van de stad. Net als ambachtslieden waren de Amsterdamse korendragers in een gilde georganiseerd en alleen leden hadden het recht om graan, zout en andere bulkgoederen te dragen. De corporatie kende geen numerus fixus en het ledental was groot. Door de eeuwen heen hebben duizenden leden, waaronder veel migranten, dit zware en risicovolle sjouwwerk verricht. Verder blijkt dat er wel degelijk een directe continuïteit heeft bestaan tussen de vroegmoderne gilden en de hedendaagse vakverenigingen. Met deze conclusie kan het langslepende academisch debat over de continuïteitsvraag eindelijk worden gesloten. Door niet alleen de organisatie, maar ook de individuele leden en de praktijk van het werk van alledag te bestuderen heeft de auteur bovendien een nieuwe dimensie toegevoegd aan de geschiedenis van de arbeid.

In de late middeleeuwen was de bierproductie een van de belangrijkste bedrijfstakken in de opkomende steden. De brouwers uit Amersfoort exporteerden hun befaamde hoppenbier naar alle naburige gewesten. Deze studie positioneert de biernijverheid van Amersfoort ten opzichte van concurrerende steden. Gunstige natuurlijke omgevingsfactoren, maar ook ondernemerschap en marktontwikkelingen droegen bij aan de opkomst, de bloei en de neergang van het brouwbedrijf aan de Eem. De bierproductie verschafte veel werkgelegenheid en de bieraccijns was de fiscale melkkoe van de overheid. Brouwers behoorden tot de gegoede burgerij en velen zaten in het stadsbestuur. Niet voor niets liep het brouwersgilde bij luisterrijke religieuze processies samen met de stadsbestuurders en de priesters van de grote kerk in de kern van de stoet. Voor de deelnemers en de toeschouwers was de boodschap helder: Amersfoort was een echte bierstad.
