Een spannende geschiedenis van de grootste diplomatieke gebeurtenis uit de Nederlandse historie. De Vredesconferenties van Den Haag legden het fundament voor de wereldorde van vandaag de dag. Moderne wapens, internationale conflicten en toenemend wantrouwen vormden aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw een gevaarlijk huwelijk. Om die dreigende geweldsspiraal te beteugelen kwam in 1899 en 1907 een bont gezelschap van diplomaten, juristen en activisten bijeen in Den Haag. Op twee internationale vredesconferenties werkten zij aan verdragen en organisaties die tot een vreedzamere wereld moesten leiden. In grootsheid en ambitie waren de conferenties ongeëvenaard – voor even was Den Haag het centrum van de wereld. Aan de hand van sleutelfiguren als de beroemde vredesactivist Bertha von Suttner en de trotse Nederlandse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Willem Hendrik de Beaufort, vertelt BenjaminDuerr het verhaal van de twee geruchtmakende conferenties. Hij laat zien hoe zij streden voor ontwapening, regels in tijden van oorlog en de oprichting van internationale rechtbanken, maar ook hoe hun idealisme botste met de realpolitik van grootmachten. Na twee wereldoorlogen bestempelden velen de Haagse conferenties als mislukt, maar in De droom van Den Haag laat Duerr met overtuiging zien dat hier het fundament werd gelegd voor de wereldorde van vandaag

FRANCIS BULHOF "What was Modernism?" That is the title of an address delivered in June of 1960 by the eminent comparatist Harry Levin at Queen's University in King ston, Ontario.1 Apparently, more than a decade ago, in the eyes of this per ceptive analyst of literature and the arts, the modernist movement had become a thing of the past. Having acquired full citizenship in the republic of letters, modernism had outlived itself. The title of Harry Levin's lecture bears an obvious resemblance to that of Fritz Martini's book-length essay Was war Expressionismus?,2 which dealt exclusively with the German variant of the expressionist movement. In the case of German expressionism there is much dispute concerning the precise moment of its decline and fall, but the political conditions provide at least a crucial dividing line in the year 1933. The end of modernism, however, a far more comprehensive movement which was not just limited to one country, is not so easy to determine. And there is also still much discussion about its roots.
