Both men were Jewish physicians who lived and practiced medicine in Vienna Austrian in the period between the World Wars. Both specialized in the treatment of mental (psychiatric) disorders. Yet, they were separated by two generations, and even more by their philosophical assumptions. When trying to understand and provide therapy for human beings, we do not so much need a science of molecules or machines, but rather, a science of persons. For a long time men and women have been spoken of, in the social sciences and in psychiatry, as if they were merely instinctual animals or mindless automatons, subject to all kinds of deterministic "mechanisms."
