This book offers a concise account of the philosophical assumptions, lives, therapeutic methods, and cultural legacies of Sigmund Freud and Viktor Frankl.A careful examination of the record will reveal several striking similarities and several striking differences in the lives and orientations of these men. Both men were Jewish physicians who lived and practiced medicine in Vienna Austrian in the period between the World Wars. Both specialized in the treatment of mental (psychiatric) disorders. Both were intellectually gifted men, who became brave advocates for their deeply held values and beliefs. They knew one another. Yet, they were separated by two generations, and even more by their philosophical assumptions. Their very different assumptions about the nature and response capacities of human beings (and their subsequent understanding of the meaning of human life) took them, their therapies, and their cultural legacies in very different - often opposing - directions ... When trying to understand and provide therapy for human beings, we do not so much need a science of molecules or machines, but rather, a science of persons. For a long time men and women have been spoken of, in the social sciences and in psychiatry, as if they were merely instinctual animals or mindless automatons, subject to all kinds of deterministic "mechanisms." This manuscript concentrates on those aspects of Frankl's thought that counteract this reductionistic tendency - by restoring to men and women an awareness of their innate potential for freedom, responsibility, and dignity.- From the Preface

In this classic work, internationally known Viennese psychiatrist Viktor E. Frankl, founder of the school of logotherapy, sets forth the principles of existential psychiatry. He holds that man's search for meaning in existence is a primary facet of his being; if the search is unrequited, it leads to neurosis. The role of the therapist, then, is to help the patient discover a purposefulness in life.

Born in 1905 in the center of the crumbling Austro-Hungarian Empire, Viktor Frankl was a witness to the great political, philosophical, and scientific upheavals of the twentieth century. In these stirring recollections, Frankl describes how as a young doctor of neurology in prewar Vienna his disagreements with Freud and Adler led to the development of "the third Viennese School of Psychotherapy," known as logotherapy; recounts his harrowing trials in four concentration camps during the War; and reflects on the celebrity brought by the publication of Man's Search for Meaning in 1945.

Through the examination of Frankl’s life as a boy to his days in a concentration camp and his post-war work, Soggie paints a rich portrait of Frankl and the origins of logotherapy. Complete with in-depth explanations of logotherapy’s key concepts, including dimensionalism, love, responsibility, and freedom of the will, this book serves as a great complement to Frankl’s own works and a valuable resource to practitioners and therapists in training alike.

★“[T]his is a scholarly, commendable biography and intellectual history. Lay readers will be challenged; psychologists and historians will be grateful.”—Library Journal, starred review First published in 1946, Viktor Frankl’s memoir Man’s Search for Meaning remains one of the most influential books of the last century, selling over ten million copies worldwide and having been embraced by successive generations of readers captivated by its author’s philosophical journey in the wake of the Holocaust. This long-overdue reappraisal examines Frankl’s life and intellectual evolution anew, from his early immersion in Freudian and Adlerian theory to his development of the “third Viennese school” amid the National Socialist domination of professional psychotherapy. It teases out the fascinating contradictions and ambiguities surrounding his years in Nazi Europe, including the experimental medical procedures he oversaw in occupied Austria and a stopover at the Auschwitz concentration camp far briefer than has commonly been assumed. Throughout, author Timothy Pytell gives a penetrating but fair-minded account of a man whose paradoxical embodiment of asceticism, celebrity, tradition, and self-reinvention drew together the complex strands of twentieth-century intellectual life. From the introduction: At the same time, Frankl’s testimony, second only to the Diary of Anne Frankin popularity, has raised the ire of experts on the Holocaust. For example, in the 1990s the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington purportedly refused to sell Man’s Search for Meaningin the gift shop.... During the late 1960s and early 1970s Frankl became very popular in America. Frankl’s survival of the Holocaust, his reassurance that life is meaningful, and his personal conviction that God exists served to make him a forerunner of the self-help genre.
