En waar hij ook was , Vincent schreef bijna altijd en overal brieven aan zijn broer Theo. Die stuurde dan geld terug, zodat Vincent zich alleen maar met schilderen hoefde bezig te houden. Theo bewaarde alles wat Vincent hem stuurde: brieven tekeningen en schilderijen. Het is dus dankzij Theo dat we nu zoveel van Vincent weten. En dat er nog ongeveer 1300 tekeningen, zo'n 850 schilderijen en ruim 800 brieven uit Nederland, Engeland, België en Frankrijk bewaard zijn gebleven.
