En este tomo de historia el siglo XVIII a partir de la creación de la Compañía Guipuzcoana, en 1728, dentro de las llamadas Reformas Borbónicas, que tanto vulneraron la autonomía alcanzada por los criollos en el seno del Cabildo durante la dinastía de los Austrias. Se le toma el pulso al país preindependentista, ya unificado alrededor de la Intendencia (1776) y de la Capitanía General (1777) y, además, experimentando una notable prosperidad agrícola. Luego, ya en el siglo XIX, se sigue la epopeya libertaria en sus vertientes civiles y militares, a partir de las abdicaciones de Bayona (1808) que dieron lugar al 19 de abril de 1810 y al 5 de julio de 1811, cuando nació la República de Venezuela. En esta investigación, la interpretación de los hechos y las figuras históricas difieren de la mayoría de las lecturas que han conducido a una petrificación ideológica de la historia nacional, enredada entre el endiosamiento de Bolívar y la sanción de cualquier análisis crítico. Este tomo articula una lectura moderna de las postrimerías de la Venezuela provincial, de la génesis fundacional republicana, de la guerra de independencia y del fracaso integracionista bolivariano de la República de Colombia, de la que Venezuela fue un Departamento, como Quito y Cundinamarca.
