« La Divinité ne s’est servie que d’un seul caractère pour donner à chacune des créatures son signe, sa figure et sa forme, de manière qu’elles apparaissent comme autant de miracles du Mystère céleste ou terrestre. Ce caractère est la croix universelle qui s’étend à travers tous les trois principes dans les sphères et les tourbillons de la Nature. Telle est l’idée qui se trouve dans le frontispice dessiné par Gichtel pour le Signatura Rerum, et que développent les seize chapitres de ce livre. Il a été une fois traduit en français, vers 1660, par un médecin, Jean Mandré, qui n’a réussi qu’à le rendre un peu plus inintelligible. Plus présomptueux que L.-C. de Saint-Martin, qui a mis un soin scrupuleux à rendre littéralement les idées de « son chérissime Boehme », j’ai cru qu’en supprimant les répétitions, en élaguant les périodes, en ajoutant des arguments, le lecteur moderne qui ne dispose pas de beaucoup de temps pourra mieux saisir le sens de ces textes profonds. Boehme n’a d’ailleurs jamais prétendu consigner des choses nouvelles ; tout ce qu’il dit se trouve dans l’Écriture et à l’école de la Nature. Par conséquent, pour le comprendre, il faut réaliser la vraie religion : imiter et suivre Jésus dans ses souffrances et sa mort, afin de revivre avec lui. C’est justement ce processus de la régénération simultanée de l’âme et du minéral, que décrit le présent livre, en se servant de la terminologie alchimique. Je veux essayer d’en donner une traduction plus concise et débarrassée des répétitions qui abondent dans les œuvres de Boehme à cause de l’insuffisance de sa culture littéraire ; je me suis permis de placer quelques notes au bas des pages pour ceux qu’intéresse l’archéologie ésotérique. » (Préface de Paul Sédir)
