Uma leitura das filosofias dos sécs. XVII e XVIII no contexto dos problemas metafísicos e metodológicos colocados pela ciência newtoniana. Procura-se, inicialmente, reconstruir esse contexto a partir das tentativas de Newton, Clarke e Hume de esclarecer o estatuto ontológico e epistemológico das entidades teóricas envolvidas na teoria da gravitação universal, principalmente em resposta às críticas feitas por Leibniz. À luz desse contexto, analisa-se a filosofia transcendental de Kant, em particular as suas condições de uso e aplicação empírica, que lhe conferem o caráter de uma autêntica "metafísica da natureza". Mostra-se que a metafísica kantiana da natureza incorpora duas dimensões, formal e material; cada qual com uma função distinta na fundamentação dos princípios nomológicos e metodológicos da ciência da natureza: a primeira fundamenta o emprego de conceitos e princípios matemáticos e dinâmicos, enquanto a segunda fundamenta o emprego das máximas do método experimental. Discute-se o problema da unidade metodológica da ciência da natureza, em virtude da impossibilidade de unificação da metafísica da natureza.

In der That gebe ich die Hofl'nung zu einigem Verdienst in dem Felde, darin ich arbeite, nicht auf. Ich empfange von allen Seiten Vor wurfe wegen der Unthatigkeit darin ich seit einiger Zeit zu sein scheine, und bin doch wirklich niemals systematischer und anhal tender beschaftigt gewesen, als seit den Jahren, da Sie mich nicht gesehen haben. Die Materien durch deren Ausfertigung ich wohl hoffen konnte einen vorubergehenden Beifall zu erlangen haufen sich unter meinen Handen. Aber sie werden insgesamt durch einen Hauptgegenstand wie durch einen Damm zuruckgehalten, an welchem ich hoffe, ein dauerhaftes Verdienst zu erwerben in dessen Besitz ich auch wirklich schon zu sein glaube und wozu nunmehr nicht sowohl nothig ist es auszudenken sondern nur es auszufertigen. Immanuel Kant's Universal Natural History and Theory of Heaven is one of his first Philosophic works and puts on full display his impressive intellect. Even though he was not a scientist, Kant's Cosmogonic theories are strikingly accurate when compared to the theories of his peers. Here he postulates the Nebular Hypothesis on the formation and evolution of planetary systems, which is today the broadly accepted theory of planet formation. He was also correct in his assumption, which was unsubstantiated by observation at the time, that our Milky Way galaxy was only one of countless, which was only confirmed by the Hubble Telescope in the 1920’s. His theories about Exoplanets were likewise only recently confirmed by the Kepler missions. This is the epicenter of the chaos of the Enlightenment, and Kant’s theories are surprisingly rational and accurate. His philosophic commentaries here are a foreshadowing of his later monumental works of Enlightenment Epistemology.
