In het Indisch Lexicon zijn bijna 19.000 Indische woorden en begrippen, zoals ze in de Nederlandse taal vanaf ongeveer 1600 gebruikt zijn, vastgelegd, omschreven en in hun context geplaatst. Van ieder woord is de betekenis gegeven op basis van reeds bestaande Indonesische, Maleise, Javaanse, Soendanese en Nederlandse woordenboeken. Niet alleen enkelvoudige woorden maar ook samenstellingen en spellingsvarianten zijn opgenomen, met citaten uit de bron waarin het betreffende woord voorkomt. Dit lexicon is een belangrijk naslagwerk om de Indische woorden en uitdrukkingen die langzaam uit ons collectieve geheugen verdwijnen, vast te houden, weer tot leven te wekken en te verklaren binnen hun semantische en culturele context. Let op: bijgaande CD functioneert niet op Windows Vista en opvolgende besturingssystemen.

De westerse grootlandbouwondernemingen die aan het eind van de vorige eeuw in Sumatra's Oostkust ontstonden werden gekenmerkt door de inzet op grote schaal van Chinese en Javaanse contractkoelies, die als dwangarbeiders vastzaten aan hun plantages. De advocaat Van den Brand vestigde in een geruchtmakende brochure die in 1902 verscheen--in dit boek in facsimile opgenomen--de aandacht op de wrede behandeling waaraan zij blootstonden. Onder politieke druk liet minister van koloniën Idenburg een onderzoek instellen. De rapportage hierover--in zijn geheel opgenomen--bevestigde de misstanden. De minister hield het rapport geheim. Tegen de ergste uitwassen werden maatregelen genomen. Het nauwe samenspel van koloniale bestuurders en kapitalistische ondernemers, zo kenmerkend voor de toenmalige koloniale ontwikkelingspolitiek, ook elders in koloniaal Azië, bleef ook daarna in stand. De auteur beschrijft en verklaart het ontstaan van de plantagesamenleving en daarna, geïllustreerd met vele voorbeelden, de barre omstandigheden waaronder de contractkoelies moesten werken en leven. Tot slot worden de reacties in publieke opinie, parlement en overheid op Van den Brands aanklacht samengevat. De verschijning van dit boek in 1987 trok grote aandacht en leidde tot een felle polemiek over de aard van het Nederlandse koloniale bestuur. In deze derde druk wordt in een nieuw voorwoord uitgebreid ingegaan op die discussie. In de tekst zijn een groot aantal nieuwe bronnen en gegevens verwerkt. Daardoor kan deze studie met nog meer recht gelden als standaardwerk over dit onderwerp.

Designed as a contribution to contrastive linguistics, the present volume brings up-to-date the comparison of German with its closest neighbour, Dutch, and other Germanic relatives like English, Afrikaans, and the Scandinavian languages. It takes its inspiration from the idea of a "Germanic Sandwich", i.e. the hypothesis that sets of genetically related languages diverge in systematic ways in diverse domains of the linguistic system. This book offers a new model for measuring the success and impact of counterterrorism strategies, using four comparative historical case studies. It focuses on the impact of counterterrorist measures by introducing the concept of the performative power of counterterrorism : the extent to which governments mobilize public and political support - thereby sometimes even unwittingly assisting terrorists in creating social drama. The concept is applied to counterterrorism in the Netherlands, Italy, the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States in the 1970s. Based on case study research using primary sources and interviews with counterterrorist officials and radicals, a correlation is established between a low level of performative power and a decline of terrorist incidents. This is explored in terms of the link between social drama (as enhanced by counterterrorist measures) and ongoing radicalization processes. The book demonstrates that an increase in visible and intrusive counterterrorist measures does not automatically lead to a more effective form of counterterrorism. In the open democracies of the west, not transforming counterterrorism into a performance of power and repression is at least as important as counterterrorism measures themselves.
