In dit verkennend kwalitatief onderzoek staan drie vragen centraal: welke sociaal-culturele rol vervult de moskee in Vlaanderen, welke samenwerking is er met de overheid en andere organisaties, en welke plaats heeft integratie in dit geheel? Met betrekking tot de sociaal-culturele activiteiten georganiseerd door de moskeeën kijken we naar de praktische organisatie, en het al dan niet passen in het sociaal-cultureel werk in Vlaanderen. In het luik over de vormen van samenwerking met de overheid en andere organisaties peilen we naar de impact van het Vlaamse en lokale beleid op moskeewerkingen. Ook gaan we na welke ondersteuning de moskeeën genieten in hun werking en hoe ze die ervaren. Welke bijkomende nood aan ondersteuning opperen deze moskeeverenigingen? Hoe kan de samenwerking verbeterd worden, zowel van de kant van de moskeeverenigingen als van de kant van de overheid? Ten slotte stellen we de vraag op welke manier de (participatie aan) moskee-activiteiten als een bijdrage tot integratie gezien kunnen worden.

Belgium was the second country in the world to introduce same-sex marriage. It has an elaborate legal system for protecting the rights of LGBT individuals in general and LGBT asylum seekers in particular. At the same time, since 2015 the country has become known as the `jihadi centre of Europe' and criticized for its `homonationalism' where some queer subjects - such as ethnic, racial and religious minorities, or those with a migrant background - are excluded from the dominant discourse on LGBT rights. Queer Muslims living in the country exist in this complex context and their identities are often disregarded as implausible. This book foregrounds the lived experiences of queer Muslims who migrated to Belgium because of their sexuality and queer Muslims who are the children of economic migrants. Based on extensive fieldwork, Wim Peumans examines how these Muslims negotiate silence and disclosure around their sexuality and understand their religious beliefs. He also explores how the sexual identity of queer Muslims changes within a context of transnational migration. In focusing on people with different migration histories and ethnic backgrounds, this book challenges the heteronormativity of Migration Studies and reveals the interrelated issues involved in migration, sexuality and religion. The research will be valuable for those working on immigration, refugees, LGBT issues, public policy and contemporary Muslim studies.

De Vlaamse Wooncode stipuleert dat het woonbeleid bijzondere aandacht moet schenken aan de meest behoeftige gezinnen en alleenstaanden. Dit boek toont aan dat het recht op wonen lang niet voor iedereen in Vlaanderen gerealiseerd is en zeker niet voor de meest kwetsbaren. De toestand is er de voorbije tien jaar ook niet op verbeterd. Integendeel. De situatie is ernstig. In België/Vlaanderen is de beleidsmix inzake wonen altijd al gedomineerd door marktwerking en eigendomspromotie. Dit heeft ertoe geleid dat almaar meer huishoudens eigenaar werden van een steeds grotere en betere woning en dit tot hun grote tevredenheid. Dit boek laat een ander beeld zien. Na een lange periode van gestage vooruitgang is de trend gekeerd. Voor het eerst is het aandeel eigenaars gedaald. Om en bij één miljoen woningen behoeft een flinke opknapbeurt en meer mensen dan tien jaar geleden kunnen na het betalen van hun woonkosten geen fatsoenlijk leven meer leiden. De problemen uiten zich onder meer via lange wachtlijsten voor woonalternatieven. Ook is de zoektocht naar een woning voor een grote groep mensen geen sinecure. Mensen die de gevangenis, een psychiatrische inrichting of een instelling van de bijzondere jeugdzorg verlaten, wacht vaak een weinig vruchtbare helletocht. Dat het realiseren van een stabiele woonsituatie geen evidentie is maar een langzaam proces waarbij verschillende persoonlijke en omgevingsfactoren van belang zijn, komt expliciet aan het licht bij dak- en thuisloosheid. Bovendien is discriminatie terug van nooit weggeweest. Om een verdere achteruitgang te vermijden én de woonnood te lenigen, moeten de fundamenten van het beleid veranderen. Daarom presenteert dit boek niet alleen analyses maar ook krijtlijnen voor een doortastend woonbeleid dat aangepast is aan de sociale, economische en ecologische uitdagingen van de 21e eeuw.
