We vinden de Rode Ridder terug nabij Ultima Thule op Groenland. Hij is er samen met nog 6 andere krijgers uit de vier windstreken: Mongo, de Afrikaan, Haroed, de Arabier, Woe-Li, de oosterling, Myriah uit de siberische steppe, Gunwald, de stuurman van hun schip en Aranja, een amazone. Deze zeven kregen een opdracht die werd gegeven door een "onbekende" opdrachtgever. Met een speciaal elixir zijn ze ook bestendig tegen de ijzige kou. Hun opdracht is om een deftig onderzoek te voeren naar de handelspost op Thule, die al geruime tijd geen teken van leven meer geeft. Ze worden eerst nog gehinderd door een vloedgolf en als toetje komt er ook nog eens een maalstroom bij. Aranja komt in het water terecht en natuurlijk duikt de onverschrokken Rode Ridder haar achterna, maar deze keer lijkt het erop dat ook Johan zijn reddingspoging niet tot een goed einde kan brengen, ware het niet dat Woe-Li hen tegemoet zwemt met een stevig touw. De drie worden uit het water terug in het schip gehesen door de vier anderen die op het schip het touw in handen hadden. Plots verdwijnt de maalstroom en Johan legt uit dat dat door de sterkte van de samenhorigheid komt, ze dreven dus de Boze Kracht terug door samen te werken. Hierop gaat het zevental aan land. Ze bereiken zonder problemen de handelspost. Mongo voelt dat er geen menselijke aanwezigheid is maar merkt toch op dat daarbinnen iets boosaardigs huist...
