Para reexaminar algumas tentativas contemporâneas que repensam a visão cristã do demoníaco, a obra oferece sua chave de leitura: combinar o caminho da linguagem simbólica com o devido peso das objeções filosóficas. Que sentido tem o mal num mundo que proveio de um Deus amoroso? Como viver da maneira mais razoável e humana possível a inexorabilidade do mal e do sofrimento sem apequenar a sugestão bíblica de que o Deus cristão odeia o mal e a maldade? A formulação clássica dos ensaios de teodiceia carrega uma aparente contradição: pretende afirmar simultânea e coerentemente que Deus é onipotente e é todo amoroso, mas o mal existe. A solução impaciente de apelar para a inexistência de Deus só adia a angústia. Com ou sem deuses, mortes estúpidas continuam ocorrendo e sofrimentos atrozes seguem nos espreitando. Além disso, como já dissera Boécio, se Deus não existe, de onde provém o bem? Em diálogo com teólogos como J. L. Segundo e Torres Queiruga, o autor gradualmente afunila a questão até chegar à concepção cristã do mal e da divindade, reconhecendo nela uma incômoda originalidade que influenciou a vida e o pensamento ocidentais justamente pelo seu potencial de quebrar a lógica redutivo-racional de pretensas teodiceias.
