A central source of frustration for most adults with ADHD is that they know what they need to do but they have difficulties turning their intentions into actions. These difficulties also interfere with their ability to use self-help books and to get the most out of psychosocial treatments that provide coping strategies that promise to improve their functioning. Drs. Ramsay and Rostain are experts in the assessment and treatment of adult ADHD and are leaders in the development of effective psychosocial treatments for this group of patients. Their newest book, The Adult ADHD Tool Kit: Using CBT to Facilitate Coping Inside and Out is a coping guide for adults living with ADHD, one that does not just present useful coping strategies but also provides specific tactics designed to help readers implement these skills in their daily lives and brings them to life in a user-friendly format. The authors discuss many different settings in which ADHD may cause difficulties, including work, school, matters of physical health and well-being, and the issue of excessive use of technology. Although written for consumers, clinicians will find the book to be a clinically useful tool for their adult patients with ADHD, serving as a companion to the newly updated and expanded second edition of Drs. Ramsay and Rostain’s professional treatment manual, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult ADHD: An Integrative Psychosocial and Medical Approach.

Basic Facts about ADHD ADHD is an acronym that stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This condition was formerly known as Attention Deficit Disorder, though the name was modified when it was noted that the affected people were also prone to severe hyperactivity. ADHD commonly manifests in young children, though most of them carry the traits over into adulthood as well. ADHD is also referred to by some people as the "single-synapse" or the "short attention span" problem. The reason for this is that ADHD's main characteristics are a marked inability to concentrate on any one thing for very long, accompanied by extremely impulsive behavior where the person doesn't stop to think at all when they get an idea or react to a situation.

ADHD is a highly comorbid disorder in patients with substance use disorders (SUD). This comorbid patient population is, however, often undertreated. Diagnosing ADHD in patients with SUD is not easy due to the large overlap of the ADHD characteristics with symptoms of intoxication and withdrawal. These patients often disappear prematurely from the treatment services, on the one hand because their untreated ADHD symptoms make it more diffi cult to follow the therapy, on the other hand because the treatment programs do not take their limitations into account. Caregivers expressed a great need for concrete tools to work with these patients. Therefore, “Managing ADHD in the presence of substance use disorders” consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The different aspects of the treatment are described from various therapeutic perspectives, and elaborated in ten modules with downloadable worksheets. “This is a practical and insightful book that I highly recommend to both novice and experienced clinicians alike.” Frances R. Levin, MD PhD, Columbia University Medical Center/New York State Psychiatric Institute “For the fi rst time clinical and scientifi c knowledge is summarized and integrated in a handsome format. In addition, this book can be used by clinicians and patients in the context of psychoeducation and as a shared decision making aid.” Wim van den Brink, MD PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and Addiction, Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam

Answering questions logically and systematically, Attention Deficit Disorder: Practical Coping Methods eliminates the confusion common among professionals treating this disorder. The book reflects the authors' belief that ADD represents a very complex syndrome that requires very specific diagnosis, including identification not only of specific attentional symptoms but also of the other accompanying issues. He elucidates an integrated approach to treatment that uses medication and coping mechanisms to address the specific problems and understand the emotional issues that may prevent the child, adolescent, or adult from working to his or her full potential.
