The book was written by the Promised Messiah(as) on 20th August 1899 and published on 24th August 1899. In this brief exposition, the Promised Messiah(as) has presented, in a new light, the same views expressed in his book Tohfa-e-Qaisariyyah [A Gift for the Queen], which was written on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. In this book, the Promised Messiah(as) has once again commended the British government for granting peace, security and religious freedom to all its subjects. He has then refuted the false doctrine of the advent of a militant Messiah and Mahdi, who according to some, would presumably, coerce the world into accepting Islam. Furthermore, he has also beautifully removed misconceptions surrounding the concept of Jihad and clearly expounds that Islam was never spread by the sword, nor is religious compulsion permitted in Islam. The Promised Messiah(as) then goes on to beautifully explain that the Christian concept of atonement, which logically results in Jesus(as) bearing the burden of curse, is a dishonour to the pure and holy person of Jesus(as). Finally, the Promised Messiah(as) has presented his claim as being the Promised Messiah and Mahdi of the latter days, awaited by all world religions.

Catherine the Great (1729-1796) wrote over two dozen plays and operettas, but not until this edition has a complete translation of any of them been available to an English- speaking readership. Oh, These Times (1772) is a satirical attack on many vices Catherine wished to root out from her society: religious hypocrisy, superstition and slander. The main character, Mrs. Pious, is a superficially religious old woman who resembles Moliere's Tartuffe. Catherine again sets her sights on superstition in The Siberian Shaman (1786), this time by satirizing shamanism as a deceitful profession which preys on the gullible. This play was part of a group of three plays usually known as Catherine's "anti-masonic" trilogy, written as a warning against the growing influence of the freemasons. In a comprehensive introduction, Lurana Donnels O'Malley relates the plays to Catherine's status and philosophy.

When I approached the Golden Egg and I was about 5 feet from the egg I was told to stop, and stand still. Looking around me I was surprised to see, all the other Dragons had made a circle around me, at a distance of about 30 feet away from where I stood. I looked at the Golden Egg that was in soft warm sand, in front of me. Then I could see that it was gently rocking from side to side, and then I noted that tiny cracks appeared, they gradually got bigger as the Golden Egg continued to rock. I heard a tapping sound coming from the Golden Egg, there was no other sound in the warm still air, I could hear my heart beating in my breast, I thought that it sounded quite loud to me and I hope that I was the only one who could hear my heart beating. I then realized that my heart beat and the tapping sound that came from the Golden egg were the same rhythm. With breathless anticipation I watched the Golden Eggs cracks become a small hole at first, and then much bigger, soon a tiny Golden Dragon was nearly fully exposed. With one final push a Beautiful Golden Little Dragon cast her eyes on me. She looked intently at me for what seemed to be a life time, but it was really only one minute, she took her first step then the second towards me on wobbly legs. Step by shaky unsteady step this little baby dragon came to me, when she was close to me she lifted her Golden head and glared at me intently, with her big brown eyes. Pleading for me to accept her, and to pat her on her Golden Head. I looked at her and my heart melted; I knew that I would love her and protect her until my life ended. I stroked her head very gently then I held her close to me in a gentle hug as a mother would her new born child.

Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, published a wide variety of works including poems, plays, letters and treatises of natural philosophy, but her significance as a political writer has only recently been recognised. This major contribution to the series of Cambridge Texts includes the first ever modern edition of her Divers Orations on English social and political life, together with a new student-friendly rendition of her imaginary voyage, A New World called the Blazing World. Susan James explains the allusions made in this classic text, and directs readers to the many intellectual debates with which Cavendish engages. Together these two works reveal the character and scope of Margaret Cavendish's political thought. She emerges as a singular and probing writer, who simultaneously upholds a conservative social and political order and destabilises it through her critical and unresolved observations about natural philosophy, scientific institutions, religion, and the relations between men and women.
