Like so many families across the world, the Semple family were split apart by the First World War. While William and Robert were fighting the Germans in France, their younger sisters, Mabel and Jelly (Eileen), had to carry on with school back in England. To keep in touch, they wrote letters. The sisters treasured these letters, which gave snapshots of their brothers' lives as soldiers. Many of the letters included cartoon illustrations to amuse the sisters. This book presents these letters with their illustrations.

Mattie Scott was a busy lady during the First World War. She saw her husband off to war in late 1914, and then subsequently followed him to Europe to work for the Canadian Army Pay Corps. She returned to her home in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1917 to care for her sick sister Bertie, but her war work didn't end. Her mother-in-law could not praise her enough for how busy she kept herself making clothes for soldiers and working with the Red Cross; her husband could barely contain his worry that she would wear herself too thin. Throughout all this she remained an avid correspondent with friends, co-workers, and family. Even the small sampling of letters in this volume sent to Mattie between September 1918 and February 1919 prove her to be someone who wrote frequent, lengthy letters and eagerly received the same.

WORLD HISTORY: FIRST WORLD WAR. This fascinating collection of letters traces the exchanges between a young subaltern on the front, Gerard 'Ged' Garvin, and his mother and father at home. Correspondence was eagerly awaited by all. Ged savored letters home like 'Jim Hawkins trickling the doubloons through his fingers'. Equally, his mother and father at home were always fearful that each letter they received would be the last. In a letter J. L. Garvin sent to his son 21 July 1916 he wrote: 'Of course there's no fresh letter from you and we didn't expect it. But we hope, all the same, to get word tomorrow . . .' Ged was killed the very next day. He was just twenty years old. Ged's father was J. L. Garvin (1868-1947) - editor of The Observer and an important figure in pre-war politics and society. Taken together the letters vividly capture the experience of a family during the First World War.
