Personal and yet utterly universal, inevitable and yet unknowable, death has been a dominant theme in all cultures, since earliest times. Different societies address death and the act of dying in culturally diverse ways; yet, remarkably, across the span of several millennia, we can recognize in the customs of ancient Greece and Rome ceremonies and rituals that have enduring present-day resonance. For example, preparing the corpse of the deceased, holding a memorial service, the practice of cremation and of burial in 'resting places' are all liminal processes that can trace their origin to ancient practices. Such rites - described by Cicero and Herodotus, among others - have defined traditional modern funerals. Yet of late there has been a shift away from classical ritual and sombre memorialization as the dead are transformed into spectacles. Ad hoc roadside shrines, 'virtual' burials, online guest-books and even jazz memorial processions and firework displays have come to the fore as new modes of marking, even celebrating, bereavement. What is causing this change, and how do urbanisation, economic factors and the rise of individualism play a part? Mario Erasmo creatively explores the nexus between classical and contemporary approaches to dying, death and interment. From theme funerals in St Louis to Etruscan sarcophagi, he offers a rich and insightful discussion of finitude across the ages.

Sure, Jackie Thum's newly published novel might not be Hemingway, but bad reviews from her fellow travelers have Emily Andrew's transgender ex-husband (Jackie was formerly Jack) steaming like a sauna. When Jackie's most outspoken critic, a Floridian from a picture-perfect gated community called The Hamlets, is found dead, suspicion falls on Jackie -- who surprises everyone with an airtight alibi. But when another guest turns up dead, Emily realizes there is a killer hiding among them. Herrings, both red and pickled, abound on a Norwegian fjord cruise -- and Jackie is suddenly nowhere to be found. With her mother arranging a wedding disaster for Emily back home in Iowa, Emily must somehow salvage her nuptials from overseas while icing a killer -- before someone else meets a nasty Finnish.

The story of Gallipoli has been told many times, but few first-hand accounts exist, and none shows such acute observation as this one by the commander who led the assault on Chunuk Bair: Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Malone. His diary and letters reveal a man of honesty, wit, knowledge and courage — and tell a moving story we should never forget. Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Malone, commanding officer of the Wellington Battalion of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli, is best known for his capture and heroic defence of Chunuk Bair on 8 August 1915. A gifted leader of men, he planned the action with his characteristic good sense and attention to detail. Chunuk Bair was held for two days before being lost in the last of a series of furious counter-attacks. By then William Malone was dead, and New Zealand had lost one of its finest officers. It emerged later that Malone had left behind a detailed diary and a large number of letters to family members and friends. Always shrewd and observant, Malone charts almost daily the events in the year leading up to Chunuk Bair: his preparation for war, the training camps, the voyage to Egypt, landing at Gallipoli, and life on the peninsula during the eventful few months from April to August 1915. Renowned for his imposition of tight discipline, Malone was nevertheless a caring and thoughtful leader of his men, always concerned for their welfare. He also loved his family, and in particular his second wife Ida. His letters to her are among the most moving in this book, and his tender concern for their young family back home shines through. The story of his older sons, three of whom also served in the Great War, forms part of the narrative too, a family story which continues right up to 2012, when Malone’s great-great-grandson was killed on active service in Afghanistan.

An original study of the role and rituals of death in Roman civilization. Death never ceases to fascinate the living and in roman society, where the mortality was high, people were forced to confront the brevity of life and the impact of death. What did death mean and symbolize to the Romans? What does 'roman death' tell the modern reader about ancient society? This accessible and engaging book ranges from suicides, funeral feasts, necromancy and Hades to mourning, epitaphs and posthumous damnation. Impressive in its broad scope and fascinating in the level of detail, Valerie Hope presents the first survey to study death in ancient Rome in such an approachable and authoritative style.
