Human society is shaped by many things, but underlying them all is one fundamental force - our fear of death. This is the ground-breaking theory explored in Mortals. 'Spoiler alert: if you read this book, you will die. But, as well as being fascinating, this book can also help you die a better death, and live a better life.' JULIAN MORROW, comedian, ABC presenter, member of The Chaser team 'A death-defying book from two leaders in the field.' PROFESSOR DAVID VEALE, King's College London The ground-breaking book that uncovers how our fear of death is the hidden driver of most of humankind's endeavours. The human mind can grapple with the future, visualising and calculating solutions to complex problems, giving us tremendous advantages over other species throughout our evolution. However, this capability comes with a curse. By five to ten years of age, all humans know where they are heading: to the grave. In Mortals, Rachel Menzies and Ross Menzies, both acclaimed psychologists whose life's work has focused on death anxiety, examine all the major human responses to death across history. From the development of religious systems denying the finality of death, to 'immortality projects' involving enduring art, architecture and literature, some of the consequences of our fear of death have been glorious while others have been destructive, leading to global conflicts and genocide. Looking forward, Mortals hypothesises that worse could be to come-our unconscious dread of death has led to rampant consumerism and overpopulation, driving the global warming and pandemic crises that now threaten our very existence. In a terrible irony, Homo sapiens may ultimately be destroyed by our knowledge of our own mortality. 'A fascinating tour of our species' attempts across millennia to come to terms with mortality. Mortals offers a stunning glimpse into what our fear of death means for our future. A must-read.' PROFESSOR THOMAS HEIDENREICH, Esslingen University

After revealing their Phobia's in class, college students begin to turn up dead, with each of them, in some way, becoming a victim of their own phobia. College students Zack, Meleah, Toby, Seth, Jordyn, Melissa, Kimberly, and several others have all decided, for their own reasons, to skip Spring break and take an extra credit course, entitled, PHOBIA'S. On the first day of class, with all of the other students having vanished to begin enjoying Spring Break, the students trudge across the deserted campus to the classroom. Inside, they are met by Professor Conlin, a handsome man, who lives up to his legend, by being arrogant and condescending. He also lives up to the legend spread by young coeds, who say that he's not only handsome, but an experienced lover. He begins by telling that everyone has a phobia, such as Acrophobia, the fear of heights, as well as Bogyphobia, Chiraptophobia, Claustrophobia, and others. Professor Conlin directs each student to search their inner beings, reflect on their lives, in order to identify that one phobia, which they possess that could possibly scare them to death. The next day, each student details the result of their research. One student details that their greatest phobia is Hydrophobia, the fear of water. Another student identifies their phobia as Ligyrophobia, the fear of loud noises. Another student identified their phobia, as Obesophobia, the fear of gaining weight. As each student details their phobia, Professor Conlin seems interested and advises that during the course, that they'll examine their phobias, in order to overcome these....irrational fears. That night, the student with the fear of water, is found drowned, in the college swimming pool. The next night, the student with the fear of gaining weight, is found dead, apparently of cutting flesh from their body. Each night, another student is found dead, with the surviving students discovering that the death of each student is related to their identified phobia. While the police determine each death as accidental, the students begin their own investigation into the deaths. The students soon suspect Professor Conlin, when they discover that he has lied about his name and background. As the students get close to proving that Professor Conlin is the killer, they discover that he's been working with another student, who is the real mastermind behind the deaths and that all of the students are connected to a tragic car accident, which occurred ten years earlier, with the real killer is not only out for revenge, but wants the students to suffer, facing their worst fears.

What do all human beings have in common? Despite all the self-help books about sex, money, power, happiness, weight, and relationships, there is one thing we all face that none of that guidance can prevent . . . death. What if we weren't so afraid of death, or of even talking about it? The fear of death -- even when it's below our conscious awareness -- underlies all fears. But, as Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler remind us in Life Lessons . . ."Fear doesn't stop death; it stops life. "What this book suggests is that exploring our fears about death -- talking about it, learning about it -- might allow us to live more fully now and to die more consciously, with less fear and less unfinished business. With thought-provoking quotes and a list of resources from the top contributors in the field, this book provides a sturdy framework for us to begin and continue our inquiry. There are practices and tools we can use along the way.The author's informal style engages us easily in considering some of the most important questions about how we want to live and how we want to die. What "Fear of Death: It's About Life, Actually" offers is an unusual opportunity to empower ourselves with regard to those questions and -- perhaps -- to help this conversation become a more natural part of our lives.

Preparing for one's own death and dying or for anyone we love is one of the most traumatic events we will ever experience. Even the thought of it can bring on fear so deeply embedded it can be debilitating or nearly so. With all of our heart we want to avoid death in its many forms happening as long as possible. Some refuse to allow themselves to dwell on this and never say a single word about it. They suffer alone. Don't be one of them. Some cultures are permeated with deeply agreed-upon superstitions. One of these insidious superstitions is the belief that speaking of one's death or the death of another will draw the event closer to fruition. Secretly, they too suffer alone. Don't be one of them. Not the easiest but the healthiest way to handle an anticipated death is to talk or write about it. Metaphorically speaking, we need to put our cards on the table face up. This book helps readers do just that!
