"Although their work is separated by three-quarters of a century, Novalis and Nietzsche both operated within the intellectual context engendered by an Enlightenment-era discussion of the human vocation. Both respond to the need for a new human identity that addresses questions about the ability of the human being to know its nature and the nature of the universe, act freely, know right from wrong, and find meaning and value in existence. At the two ends of the nineteenth century, they present different responses to the problem of alienation within this new context, as Novalis attempts to salvage a broadly Christian framework for the human vocation, while Nietzsche reacts against Christian values and ways of providing meaning, as well as those of its secular successors.Despite this important difference, Novalis and Nietzsche share a goal of providing an affirming model of life that escapes the conventional dichotomy of immanent and transcendent. I compare their models of creative affirmation to highlight their insights and weaknesses and to identify characteristics of their work useful for a new response to alienation. The first and second parts of the thesis examine their respective attempts to enable affirmation, analysing their accounts of death and suffering, community, and myth, and questioning the extent to which these avoid relying on the transcendent. The third part identifies aspects of their work that can contribute to a life-affirming response to alienation. I argue that, while neither provides a fully satisfying response to the modern situation of alienation that motivated them, both have insights that should be used in attempts to cope with the disorientation and isolation associated with the loss of an authoritative statement of the vocation of humankind. Nietzsche's thoroughgoing rejection of the transcendent and highlighting of tensions characterising human life must form part of a response to alienation, while Novalis' models of freedom, communication, and community better promote fulfilling ways of making sense of life in the face of its darker aspects. My concluding chapter outlines a form of immanent affirmation based on these strengths, arguing that this can take place in a dialogical community of creative individuals." --

The study of the myths of preliterate society is at times a painstaking venture because of the often rather unfortunate misinterpretation of these myths as false stories based on imagination. But myth, as a lived religious experience of a particular cultural society asserts the necessity for expression of transcendent realities which in turn are expressed in symbolic forms. It governs the faith and controls the conduct of the people who live the myths in their ritual ceremonies. As a narrative resurrection of primordial reality with normative influence myth satisfies deep religious needs, fixes customs, sanctions and modes of behaviour. This work undertakes to show that religious myths of the preliterate society - especially the myths of creation of man and the origin of death - are not illusive stories concocted to deceive common mind but rather mental deductions of the preliterate mind of the history of his religion, the knowledge of his origin, death and the hereafter.

Almost every religious mythology contains the primordial motif of death and rebirth and portrays the posthumous journey of the deceased following death. Myths of the afterlife exist in all cultures, including that of the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, Babylonians, Romans and Celts and continue to manifest in living faiths such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Although human consciousness has evolved over time, the mystery of death remains beyond rational perception and gives rise to feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. Inquiring whether death may be a transition to rebirth requires looking back into the universal language of myth, which symbolizes the germ of life existing in an afterlife state. As will be shown, this ancient model of the otherworldly journey and resurrection continues to appear in the near-death experience.

Because every single one of us will die, most of us would like to know what—if anything—awaits us afterward, not to mention the fate of lost loved ones. Given the nearly universal vested interest in deciding this question in favor of an afterlife, it is no surprise that the vast majority of books on the topic affirm the reality of life after death without a backward glance. But the evidence of our senses and the ever-gaining strength of scientific evidence strongly suggest otherwise. In The Myth of an Afterlife: The Case against Life after Death, Michael Martin and Keith Augustine collect a series of contributions that redress this imbalance in the literature by providing a strong, comprehensive, and up-to-date casebook of the chief arguments against an afterlife. Divided into four separate sections, this collection opens with a broad overview of the issues, as contributors consider the strongest evidence of whether or not we survive death—in particular the biological basis of all mental states and their grounding in brain activity that ceases to function at death. Next, contributors consider a host of conceptual and empirical difficulties that confront the various ways of “surviving” death—from bodiless minds to bodily resurrection to any form of posthumous survival. Then essayists turn to internal inconsistencies between traditional theological conceptions of an afterlife—heaven, hell, karmic rebirth—and widely held ethical principles central to the belief systems supporting those notions. In the final section, authors offer critical evaluations of the main types of evidence for an afterlife. Fully interdisciplinary, The Myth of an Afterlife: The Case against Life after Death brings together a variety of fields of research to make that case, including cognitiveneuroscience, philosophy of mind, personal identity, philosophy of religion, moralphilosophy, psychical research, and anomalistic psychology. As the definitive casebookof arguments against life after death, this collection is required reading for anyinstructor, researcher, and student of philosophy, religious studies, or theology. It issure to raise provocative issues new to readers, regardless of background, from thosewho believe fervently in the reality of an afterlife to those who do not or are undecidedon the matter.

The death penalty remains one of the most controversial issues in the United States. Its proponents claim many things in their defense of its continued application. For example, they claim that it deters crime, that death by lethal injection is painless and humane, that it is racially neutral, and that it provides closure to families of the victims. In this comprehensive review of the major death penalty issues, the authors systematically dismantle each one of these myths about capital punishment in a hard-hitting critique of how our social, political, and community leaders have used fear and myth (symbolic politics) to misrepresent the death penalty as a public policy issue. They successfully demonstrate how our political and community leaders have used myth and emotional appeals to misrepresent the facts about capital executions. Successive chapters address the following topics: the notion of community bonding, the expectation of effective crime fighting, the desire for equal justice, deterrence, the hope for fidelity to the Constitution, the claim of error-free justice, closure, retribution, cost-effectiveness, and the messianic desires of some politicians. In each of these areas the authors quote from death penalty advocates making these claims and then proceed to analyze and ultimately dismember the claimed advantages of the death penalty.
