Inside the furnace was a seething pool of molten metal, bubbling with a heat great enough to destroy a man's body so completely it would be impossible to trace. And Gerald Norris had disappeared without a trace! In London, Julie Crocker was hunting for her brother amongst the demi-monde of unsuccessful artists. He too had disappeared, leaving no trace except an indifferent painting in a Soho restaurant. Against the backdrop of the power and heat of the steelworks and the overcrowded bars of Soho, private detective John Bryant sets about investigating both mysteries. Mysteries that can only be solved in the consuming flames of yet another fire.

'Challenging and disturbing, The Melting is an incredibly cruel fable about friendship and adolescence . . . Spit knows no fear. It is we, the readers, that are left trembling.' - Leïla Slimani, author of Lullaby Eva can trace the route to Pim’s farm with her eyes closed, even though she has not been to Bovenmeer for many years. There she grew up among the rape fields and dairy farms. There lies also the root of all their grief. Eva was one of three children born in her small Flemish town in 1988. Growing up alongside the boys Laurens and Pim, Eva sought refuge from her loveless family life in the company of her two friends. But with adolescence came a growing awareness of their burgeoning sexuality. Driven by their newly found desires, the children begin a game that will have serious and violent consequences for them all. Thirteen years after the summer she’s tried for so long to forget, Eva is returning to her village. Everything fell apart that summer, but this time she’ll be prepared. She has a large block of ice in her car boot and she’s ready to settle the score . . . Part thriller, part coming-of-age novel, The Melting is an extraordinary and unsettling debut from Lize Spit, a reckoning with adolescent cruelty and the scars it leaves.

As secularism and commercialism proceed to dominate American life, the removal of structures that protect and nurture the spiritual experience has perilous effects. Values wane; greed, self-interest, and incidents of conflict alarm. Chambers of the soul are invaded and the dearest treasures sacked. Those most vulnerable are children and youth, the married, the poor, and the disconnected. While in his first book Songs of the Lesser Servants the author presented in poetry spiritual experiences and perceptions of the changing social situation, this book concentrates on secularisms effect on the inner person. Melting World presents the ever-renewing spiritual contrasted with worldly ruin. Poems of experience, vision, parable, and allegory spring from everyday situations. Each poem challenges the reader to examine current perceptions of faith and secularism. Modern humanity must realize that secularism is not ideal society before it is too late to turn back. Under the guise of issues of church and state, mans spirituality is removed in schools, public places and media. Generations view man as a higher primate without soul or spirit. Spiritual man without Gods presence dies in a melting world. Hope remains in begin again.

The social, political, and cultural consequences of attempts to cheat death by freezing life. As the planet warms and the polar ice caps melt, naturally occurring cold is a resource of growing scarcity. At the same time, energy-intensive cooling technologies are widely used as a means of preservation. Technologies of cryopreservation support global food chains, seed and blood banks, reproductive medicine, and even the preservation of cores of glacial ice used to study climate change. In many cases, these practices of freezing life are an attempt to cheat death. Cryopreservation has contributed to the transformation of markets, regimes of governance and ethics, and the very relationship between life and death. In Cryopolitics, experts from anthropology, history of science, environmental humanities, and indigenous studies make clear the political and cultural consequences of extending life and deferring death by technoscientific means. The contributors examine how and why low temperatures have been harnessed to defer individual death through freezing whole human bodies; to defer nonhuman species death by freezing tissue from endangered animals; to defer racial death by preserving biospecimens from indigenous people; and to defer large-scale human death through pandemic preparedness. The cryopolitical lens, emphasizing the roles of temperature and time, provokes new and important questions about living and dying in the twenty-first century.
