A cold wet January in 1951, a man's body stabbed through the heart is found tangled up in fishing nets. Scotland Yard's Inspector Ryga is sent to Brixham, Devon to investigate. Former war photographer, Eva Paisley, insists that Scotland Yard detective, Inspector Ryga, return with her to the Devon coast where she has been staying with a friend, a former refugee from Belgium. Eva remains tight-lipped about the reason, saying only that she's puzzled and concerned over something she has heard since arriving there a week ago. Ryga, off duty for the weekend, is only too pleased to escape London for the sea air and spend time in Eva's company. She takes him to a house in the fishing port of Brixham where the son of her friend is adamant that he's seen a body on the shore 'all bashed up'. Eva claims the little boy has been talking of nothing more for a week. The boy's mother dismisses it as an over-active imagination but Eva's not convinced. Now the child is adamant the body he saw was on the very night of their arrival. Ryga asks the child to take them to the location, not expecting to see anything, but is stunned to find the child has been telling the truth; on the dark shore, on the wet January night is indeed the body of a man, stabbed through the heart and tangled up in fishing nets. After making some preliminary enquiries, Ryga, who has no jurisdiction to investigate, has to hand the case over to the local police. Very soon though, after a series of startling revelations, he is summoned back to Devon to discover why the dead man who left the town eleven years ago has returned and why someone hated him enough to murder him. "Captures the period perfectly... Kept me enthralled to the end""Pure detection mixed with a bit of history. Love these characters and the setting is great."

How insecticide-treated bed nets became a staple of global public health initiatives and reshaped health practices in Africa and beyond. Distributed to millions of people annually across Africa and the global south, insecticide-treated bed nets have become a cornerstone of malaria control and twenty-first-century global health initiatives. Despite their seemingly obvious public health utility, however, these chemically infused nets and their rise to prominence were anything but inevitable. In Nothing But Nets, Kirsten Moore-Sheeley untangles the complicated history of insecticide-treated nets as it unfolded transnationally and in Kenya specifically—a key site of insecticide-treated net research—to reveal how the development of this intervention was deeply enmeshed with the emergence of the contemporary global health enterprise. While public health workers initially conceived of nets as a stopgap measure that could be tailored to impoverished, rural health systems in the early 1980s, nets became standardized market goods with the potential to save lives and promote economic development globally. This shift attracted donor resources for malaria control amid the rise of neoliberal regimes in international development, but it also perpetuated a paradigm of fighting malaria and poverty at the level of individual consumers. Africans' experiences with insecticide-treated nets illustrate the limitations of this paradigm and provide a warning for the precariousness of malaria control efforts today. Drawing on archival, published, and oral historical evidence from three continents, Moore-Sheeley reveals the important role Africans have played in shaping global health science and technology. In placing both insecticide-treated nets and Africa at the center of global health history, this book sheds new light on how and why commodity-based health interventions have become so entrenched as solutions to global disease control as well as the challenges these interventions pose for at-risk populations.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Evidence of Harm and Animal Factory—a groundbreaking scientific thriller that exposes the dark side of SeaWorld, America's most beloved marine mammal park Death at SeaWorld centers on the battle with the multimillion-dollar marine park industry over the controversial and even lethal ramifications of keeping killer whales in captivity. Following the story of marine biologist and animal advocate at the Humane Society of the US, Naomi Rose, Kirby tells the gripping story of the two-decade fight against PR-savvy SeaWorld, which came to a head with the tragic death of trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010. Kirby puts that horrific animal-on-human attack in context. Brancheau's death was the most publicized among several brutal attacks that have occurred at Sea World and other marine mammal theme parks. Death at SeaWorld introduces real people taking part in this debate, from former trainers turned animal rights activists to the men and women that champion SeaWorld and the captivity of whales. In section two the orcas act out. And as the story progresses and orca attacks on trainers become increasingly violent, the warnings of Naomi Rose and other scientists fall on deaf ears, only to be realized with the death of Dawn Brancheau. Finally he covers the media backlash, the eyewitnesses who come forward to challenge SeaWorld's glossy image, and the groundbreaking OSHA case that challenges the very idea of keeping killer whales in captivity and may spell the end of having trainers in the water with the ocean's top predators.

Every organism must recognize damage-associated and pathogen-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs and PAMPs) to react rapidly. The immune system requires potent negative regulators to control unnecessary or overshooting responses and balance the homeostasis in all tissues. A significant number of negative regulators of pattern recognition receptors (PRR) consist of modified innate sensors and downstream molecules that regulate inflammatory signals initiated by sterile, damage-associated inflammation as well as responses to pathogens. These conserved mechanisms contribute to immune homeostasis, maintain a constant number of immune cells, and limit the activation of the cells during frequent stimulations by antigens. The same mechanisms enable maintaining the symbiotic relationship between host and tissue microbiota. Moreover, negative regulators of PRRs play a fundamental role in the training of the host immune system and the development of immune tolerance. They ensure that the response of immune cells is precise and potent enough to eliminate the source of inflammation but do not develop into fatal inflammatory disease. The complex cellular environment in which cells are organized allows interactions between different cell types. Various environmental signals determine their phenotype, the degree of maturation, and responses. Regulatory mechanisms and molecules determine the necessity and efficiency of host defense, disease progression, and restoring of the homeostasis. Various studies have revealed the crucial role of homeostasis and mechanisms of immune-control under physiological and pathological conditions, as well as their substantial potential as a target in clinical applications. However, the molecular instruments that reshape the tissue responses remain poorly understood. In this Research Topic, we welcome contributions as Original Research, Reports, Case Reports, Reviews, Mini Reviews, and Perspective articles focusing on immunomodulatory molecules in the context of the host response to pathogen and tissue injury. Manuscripts on the following subtopics are welcome: 1. Regulation of inflammatory responses by negative regulators of diverse PRRs (TLRs, NLRs, RLRs, CLRs, etc.) 2. Maintaining of tissue homeostasis and disorders caused by an imbalance between triggers and negative regulators 3. Strategies used by pathogens targeting modifications of negative regulators

England 1950, a country still struggling to come to terms with peace in the grip of austerity and rationing. When the body of a man dressed in a pinstriped suit is discovered by war photographer, Eva Paisley, in a secluded bay on Portland Island, Dorset, Inspector Alun Ryga of Scotland Yard is despatched to investigate. Recently promoted, the thoughtful, observant Ryga, is on his first solo investigation outside of London, and is keen to prove his worth. Ignoring the warnings of the local police inspector, and the Dorset Chief Constable, that his trust in Eva Paisley is misjudged, Ryga quickly realises that her observations could provide the breakthrough he needs in a complex murder investigation and the answer to the haunting circumstances that have sent the man in the pinstriped suit to his death. "Ryga studied the face of the dead man with interest. Death no longer had the power to shock him. He'd seen too much of it. That didn't mean he didn't feel sorrow, pity, anger or despair, or sometimes all four emotions and in such a swift succession that they became one. This time he felt none of these, only professional curiosity."
