Provienen de revistas y diarios, ilustran cuatro décadas de actividad literaria, y no habían sido publicados antes en forma de libro (salvo el microcuento “La confesión”). Completa la pintura del autor con dos ejemplos de crítica (literaria y cinematográfica), actividad que fue permanente en la escritura de Peyrou, y el “Desagravio a Borges”, publicado en la revista Sur. Incluye también un breve estudio introductorio sobre estos textos rescatados y sobre el autor. El falso ensayo “Decadencia de la antropofagia” retoma la tradición del humor británico para tratar con la mayor seriedad un asunto imposible; el cuento “Diana Lancaster, 25 años, soltera” completa la producción en el género más propio del autor, el policial; en “El vendedor de biblias” y “Bancarrota”, el humor, por momentos mordaz y marca característica de Peyrou, juega un papel esencial; “La confesión” es el texto más difundido de Peyrou en las redes, pero es casi inhallable en libro; los cinco cuentos finales, publicados en La Prensa entre 1969 y 1974, son ventanas a vidas e historias privadas, construidas con la delicadeza y la economía de recursos propias del autor maduro.

Argentine Queer Tango: Dance and Sexuality Politics in Buenos Aires investigates changes in tango dancing in Buenos Aires during the first decade of the twenty-first century and its relationship to contemporary social and cultural transformations. Mercedes Liska focuses on one of the proposed alternatives to conventional tango, queer tango, which proposes to rethink one of the alleged icons of a national culture from a feminist conception and to imagine social transformation processes from bodily experiences. Specifically, this book analyzes the value of bodily experiences, the redefinition of the mind-body relationship, and the transformation in the dynamics of the dance from the heteronormative movements of tango. In doing so, Liska addresses the ways in which bodily techniques and gender theories are involved in the denaturing and corporeality decoding of tango and its historical senses as well as the connections between different tango dance practices spread throughout the world.

At the turn of the twenty-first century, Argentina was in the midst of its worst economic crisis in decades, the result of years of drastic neoliberal reforms. This book looks at the way ideas about race and nationhood were conveyed during this period of financial meltdown and national emergency, examining in particular how the neoliberal crisis led to the critical self-questioning of the dominant imaginary of Argentina as homogeneously white – allegedly the result of European immigration and the extinction of most indigenous and black people in the nation-building age. The Darkening Nation focuses on how the self-examination of racial and national identity triggered by this crisis was expressed in culture, through the analysis of literary texts, films, artworks and music styles. By considering a wide range of artistic and cultural products, and different forms of racial identity and difference (white, indigenous, Afro-descendant, immigrant and negro as it is understood in local contexts), this study constitutes a timely addition from a literary and cultural studies perspective to recent academic enquiry into race and nation in Argentina.

The figure of the freak as perceived by the Western gaze has always been a part of the Latin American imaginary, from the letters that Columbus wrote about his encounters with dog-faced people to Shakespeare's Caliban. The freak acquires greater significance in a globalized, neoliberal world that defines the "abnormal" as one who does not conform mentally, physically, or emotionally and is unable or unwilling to follow the economic and cultural norms of the institutions in power. Freak Performances examines the continuing effects of colonialism on modern Latin American identities, with a particular focus on the way it has constructed the body of the other through performance. Theater questions the representations of these bodies, as it enables the empowerment of the silenced other; the freak as a spectacle of otherness finds in performance an opportunity for re-appropriation by artists resisting the dominant authority. Through an analysis of experimental theater, dance theater, performance art, and gallery-based installation art across eight countries, Analola Santana explores the theoretical issues shaped by the encounters and negotiations between different bodies in the current Latin American landscape.

Thierry Saignes falleció el 24 de agosto de 1992, a la edad de 46 años. Acababa de publicar dos libros: Ava y Karai. Ensayos sobre la historia chiriguano (La Paz, HISBOL, 1990) y, en colaboración con Isabelle Combès, Alter Ego. Naissance de l’identité chiriguano (París, EHESS/Cahiers de l’Homme, 1991). Luego de décadas de trabajos dedicados al piedemonte andino y a los Andes, el historiador francés volvía así a su primer tema de investigación: los chiriguano y, muy particularmente, la frontera chiriguano. La elección de esta etnia fue en un sentido casi casual, resultado de los consejos de don Gunnar Mendoza, director del Archivo Nacional de Bolivia en Sucre (Mendoza, 1980; Saignes, 1990: 16; 1992: 12). De hecho, los Expedientes Coloniales, el fondo de manuscritos Rück o la correspondencia de la Audiencia de Charcas, entre otros, son fondos que conservan una enorme suma de informaciones sobre los chiriguano coloniales; bajo el impulso de Gunnar Mendoza, se creó incluso un fichero especial “chiriguano” para facilitar la búsqueda de los documentos a los investigadores. De ahí la sugerencia del director del Archivo, pues nadie o casi nadie, hasta los años setenta, había realizado un trabajo sistemático de investigación en esos fondos documentales.

La historia de la cultura está hecha de negaciones que se instalan durante siglos en el imaginario de los investigadores. Así ocurrió por ejemplo con el dionisismo en el marco de la idealización corriente del universo griego o con el tantrismo dentro de la tradición budista, y también ese ha sido el caso del canibalismo, que, a pesar de ser clave para la comprensión de las culturas prehispánicas, ha sido objeto de estigma más que de estudio para la filosofía y las ciencias humanas. Adolfo Chaparro Amaya cubre con creces ese vacío y analiza exhaustivamente una multiplicidad de evidencias icónicas, etnográficas e históricas presentes en estudios de diversas disciplinas -arqueología, antropología, semiótica, mitología, historia, sociología-, que en conjunto revelan una suerte de constelación americana del canibalismo pre y poshispánico.
