Entre los mejores cuentos cabe destacar La buena suerte de Martn Gafo que contiene memorables descripciones de las flores en eclosin de los caaverales, y La muerte de Anacleto, tal vez la ms conmovedora y cuidadosamente construida de las historias. La vaca vieja, el ltimo cuento de la coleccin, es tal vez el ms ambicioso. La inclusin de un rbol familiar, al estilo del que se ofrece en Cien aos de soledad, podra ayudar sustancialmente al lector a seguir la historia.
