The increased use of quality designs in 19th-century manufactured goods created a steady demand during that period for collections of decorative patterns. This volume reproduces one such collection ― an extremely rare and valuable portfolio of 376 motifs assembled more than a century ago by two French Jesuit scholars. Relying on historical wall and floor tiles, textile patterns, tapestries, wall hangings, and other designs originating in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and later European and Islamic cultures, Charles Cahier (1807–1882) and Arthur Martin (1802–1856) produced a work of true artistic distinction. Included are a wealth of splendid floral, animal, bird, and geometric patterns, carefully researched and meticulously redrawn for use in a myriad of graphic and artistic projects. Many of the motifs are accompanied by complementary border designs, an often essential accessory. This edition faithfully reproduces the edition published in 1868, titled Suite aux mélanges d'archéologie. It represents an invaluable copyright-free resource embodying the finest designs from historic sources, ready for use by artists, illustrators, craftspeople, and designers working with textiles, wallpapers, interior decoration, and other projects.

Designs And Patterns From Historic Ornament written by W. and G. Audsley and has been published by Courier Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-03 with Design categories.

This well-known book was prepared a century ago by two British architects, and its reputation has grown steadily since. The Audsleys' rendering of designs from a wide variety of sources are national traditions, and their excellent sense of space and proportion and their straightforward interpretations of these ornaments have made this collection among the most valuable of its kind. The 60 plates contain over 250 large-scale line drawings, mostly executed by the authors. The designs and patterns shown are derived from architectural decorative motifs, textile designs, patterns from ceramics, etc. A brief text specifies sources for many of the designs, and captions identify national origin and often the original color schemes. The illustrations include ancient Egyptian patterns from painted tomb ceilings, borders from Greek vases, Celtic designs, Japanese ornaments, Moorish decorations, eleventh-century Italian textile designs, and architectural elements from the cathedral of Notre-Dame and other buildings. This partial list of contents gives an idea of the many styles of design reproduced in the book, and the applications to which the designs can be put. Commercial artists, architects, crafters, designers, scene designers, and others will find these pages a rich source of decorative designs.

The original 100 color plates, meticulously reproduced here from the rare original folio edition, present a dazzling spectrum of copyright-free design motifs from both ancient and modern cultures. The Grammar of Ornament features designs from around the world: the West to the Far East and many cultures in between. Graphic and fine artists will find nearly three thousand designs rendered in fine detail from a variety of sources: Greek and Roman borders and mosaics Celtic designs taken from manuscripts Motifs from medieval paintings and stained glass Floral patterns from Chinese porcelain, wood, and fabrics Illuminated script from the Koran Ornamentation from Turkish mosques and tombs Moorish designs from the Alhambra Connoisseurs of art and design will find the book's rich display of decorative motifs an endless source of contemplative pleasures. The work of the celebrated English designer and architect Owen Jones, The Grammar of Ornament, initially published in 1856, was the first book to present a global and historical range of ornament in color, the first to display "primitive" art for its design content, and among the first to suggest nature as a basic design source. Widely used and circulated, this prophetic work ushered in a major change in Western aesthetics and heralded the move towards nonrepresentational art. Its value as a beautifully organized and produced pictorial museum of historic ornamental design remains unsurpassed.

Paisley Patterns written by Valerie Reilly and has been published by Gramercy this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with Industries categories.

"One of the most enduring motifs that man has ever devised is that known to the English speaking world as the Paisley Pattern. Originating in pre-historic times as a representative plant form, it has been in constant use, in one way or another, for over 2000 years. When introduced into Europe late in the eighteenth century, the pattern was seen as something exotic and was soon enthusiastically copied by textile manufacturers in Britain and France. The shawls, which were the principle garments to be decorated with the motif, remained an essential part of a woman's wardrobe for virtually a century, adapting in size and shape as each new dress fashion came along. During that time millions of shawls were produced, in thousands of different varieties. The town of Paisley was the largest producer of the shawls and although the industry no longer dominates, the fame of the Paisley Pattern lives on. The Paisley Museum, established in 1871, has over the years built up an enormous collection of shawls for display and research purposes. Just as important as the shawls themselves, however, are the manufacturers' original pattern books, which contain large numbers of examples of the various stages in producing a design for a shawl. One hundred and fifty of the best pieces of artwork have been selected and have been faithfully reproduced in this lavishly illustrated volume. Dates of the designs and historical information have been included wherever possible, making the book important for both textile historians and students of design. With the current revival of fashionable interest in both the pattern and the shawl itself, the contents of the book will surely provide a vital source of inspiration for yet more variations of this exquisite and enduring design."--Provided by publisher
